Why can't someone offer, either through wireless service or through the phones, anonymous call rejection? We have had this service for over 15 years on land lines, but for some reason no one wants to offer this service for wireless. I have a friend who is getting obscene "Private" calls at 2am that she has no idea who they are coming from. Calling the service provider has been useless. They said that since she doesn't know the number that is calling her, they can't block it. Their suggestion is to change the number and not give it out to anyone. That is unacceptable due to the fact that she has a business that relies on her being on call at all times. It shouldn't be too hard to offer a phone that will give a message to a "Blocked" or "Private" caller that those type of calls are not accepted. If the caller wants to contact the owner of the phone, they need to unblock their caller id. Or it could even just send them to voicemail if they don't want to disclose their phone number. The service could also be overridden by law enforcement if necessary.
I think blocking unknown numbers should be possible, but will probably vary by phone. I would guess either the phone would have to have that as a built-in feature, or you'd have to download some kind of app for that. Something that would scan your contacts list, match it to an incoming call number, and if it doesn't match then reject it. Doesn't sound too hard. Maybe I can give it a shot. But I'd guess someone already made one. Search around. ...or try assigning ringtones to each known contacts and a silent one for all others (ie: unknown)...
My LG phones allow assignment of a ringer called "none" to restricted numbers. Therefore this will keep the phone from ringing. My new Samsung will not do this.
The Voyager has an option (which appears on most, if not all, Verizon LG phones) where, though the Security menu, calls can only be received from contacts. All others get voicemail. The only problem I've run into with this feature is it won't let you add a contact when it's activated. Unfortunately most phone makers don't offer options such as this (or others like it).
My enV Touch has this as well... the older Motorolas have the feature. It looks like the all or nothing feature is buried in the security menu of CDMA phones. I don't care for the all or nothing feature... I don't mind if a phone number shows up on the CID (family changes their phone numbers like they change the undies), but I 'd rather have a anonymous call reject service LOL
