my old Nokia 5165 says "cingular extended" and also gets the "american roaming.com" message when you try to call on it has full bars seemingly everywhere i go. btw you dont have to buy minutes. you can collect call landlines from it also. just make sure you dial someone that you are sure is going to answer as the collect call rates is 2.99/per call 1.99/ per min
I have an analog carphone. The thing still works, its 16 years old. I have been made well aware by Verizon that my service is being terminated. Its a shame, that thing gets much better reception than my a990. I do have a digital bag phone- it runs on the AMPS/TDMA network, but the TDMA is being phased out as well, so it is worthless. It doesn't have service on it, so I just get an error message if I try to call out on it. Its more for nostalgia than anything else. Has anyone tried that cartel phone linked previously? I'm thinking about replacing the AMPS phone with that...
-It is a shame that analog is being phased out the service is always four or five bars on my analog carphone too, even when my LG VX8000 has only one. It also sucks that even TDMA DIGITAL is being phased out as well, ugh. I read somewhere that Motorola actually released a limited amount of digitial CDMA bagphones in the late 90's, but they are super rare and go for $300-$500 today. Anyways I'm also thinking about getting the blue tooth linked Cartel phone, of course I need to get a phone with blue tooth to use it. I don't know if you found out already but in case you didn't the price for the Cartel system is about $520 installed, if you want it to link with your car's speakers, and $450 if you just get an external speaker, which is I think what I am going to get.
The bagphones that you mentioned are, I believe, the TDMA digital ones. They were made in very limited quantities for only about 3 months. They pop up once or twice a year on eBay, and its always a bidding war over them. That cartel system is grossly expensive! Did you get a price on just the unit (minus the installation?) I can install it myself, thats not a problem.
I'm suprised that they don't make a GSM model for use in police cars, ambulances, taxis, and those looking for the "retro" look. -Jay
Motorola makes the M800 and M900 which are CDMA and GSM bagphones, respectively. They are essentially worthless because they operate at 1 watt (not the full 3 watts) and are grossly expensive ( like $400). They are even bigger than the 90's ones, and cumbersome to use.
They look pretty cool. Motorola says the M900 has 3 times the range of standard handsets, and even further with an externally mounted antenna on a vehicle. -Jay
-I saw those too on ebay, very disappointed. They look nothing like original Motorola car phones, they look like Nokia candy bar phones only kinda rounded and a little bigger and they are definitely extremely over priced. The price I mentioned before regarding the Cartel Bluetooth System is with the installation included (both price options). I admit, when I first saw their website I figured it cost maybe around $250-$300 MAX, but if you just get the external speaker which is good enough, $450ish installed isn't too terrible if you really want a carphone, plus there's really nothing else out there right now at least. Now that I have my new VX9400 with bluetooth I think I'm gonna do this. Also the handset is not just a cheap thing to dial on it has some nice features on it, rings like a regular one would, phone book, speed dials, lighted dial, etc. It's pretty well-equipped, as it should be for that price. Still should be about $150 less but...eh
I checked out the cartel system today. There is a cell phone shop not too far from my house that carries these things. I have to say, it looks very impressive. If you go with an external speaker, the installation is pretty non-invasive. The price is high for it, but it does have alot of nice features. I'd really like to buy one, but I just can't afford one right now.
