AP Alltel to Offer Location Caller ID Tuesday May 22, 10:54 am ET Alltel Launches Caller ID Function That Will Display Location Information LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -- Alltel Corp. announced Tuesday the launch of an enhanced caller ID function that will give city and state information for the person who is calling. Alltel, which will sell the service for $1.99 per month, is initially making the service available on one phone, the LG AX275. The company says the service, called City ID, will be expanded to other phones later. The function will match the incoming number with the location of where the phone is registered, Alltel said. The application can identify more than 15,000 cities, towns and neighborhoods. "Customers frequently do not recognize an incoming phone number, and this application will provide the additional information to help users decide if they want to answer the call," Alltel senior vice president of wireless products Wade McGill said. Little Rock, Ark.-based Alltel has 12 million customers spread over the West, Midwest and Southeast.
Hmm...interesting. I think showing the number is good enough for me; I don't think I'd pay $1.99 to get city/state info.
Sounds like a good idea. I got an LG AX4270, so, not quite yet. But it's LGs advantage. Maybe someday
The Caller ID on my Sprint PCS phone shows the state and number. Example from what is shown on my phone when I receive a call: Virginia 276-xxx-xxxx
Well, your just paying $2 per month for the convenience. I do reverse phone lookups on MelissaData.com & InfoSpace.com for free. MelissaData tells me the city & state of any area code, & local exchange (next 3 digits), plus other things. InfoSpace, a.k.a. an online phonebook, will let me match the number to an address (no cell phones listed here). Also, My home phone service, SunRocket (VoIP) lets me see blocked calls to the house (via the online call log / missed call column)
