Alltel Customers Allowed To Opt Out Of AT&T Contracts

Metro-area cell phone customers who were recently forced to switch service will now have an option when it comes to mobile service.

As 5 On Your Side reported Tuesday, AT&T Wireless sold its Oklahoma City service to Arkansas-based Alltel in April. Since then, the company has been trying to upgrade nearly 130 cellular towers.

In the meantime, the company's customers, such as Alison Caine, have been putting up with spotty service and dropped calls.

"Just yesterday, I was on the phone and my service completely cut out," Caine said. "So I had to call the person back (and) completely interrupt the phone call."

Alltel spokesman Bill Oltean said the company is well-aware of the problems and hopes to have a remedy soon.

"Once we get that new network in place, we are confident it will be a better experience than what these folks have had," Oltean said.

Oltean said the new network will be launched next week. He said customers will also get more information about Alltel's coverage area and rate plans.

Anyone who is still unhappy will be allowed to switch away from the provider. Alltel said old AT&T Wireless customers will be allowed to opt out of their contracts at no cost.

So this lady has never dropped a call before? I guess I should have been with ATTWS all these years. :)

In all seriousness, though, I do think it is very good business on the part of Alltel to allow these people out of their contracts. Seems pretty out of character for a wireless provider, though.

this could be the reason for this:

OKLAHOMA CITY, July 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Cingular Wireless, the country's
largest wireless provider, announced it will invest more than
$59 million in Oklahoma in 2005 to install 43 new cell sites and supporting
    equipment for network growth.
The new sites include 22 in the Oklahoma City area and 21 in the Tulsa
area. The construction program is part of a $6.2 billion commitment to enhance
and expand its ALLOVER(SM) network* nationwide.

Wow, very fair of Alltel to allow former ATT customers to leave after all the upgrades are done. I guess they must feel confident that their network will be robust. Some people who are still in contract though and who want to switch either way will get a free card with this one.

Is this opt-out offer restricted to Oklahoma customers only?

Yes, if that's the only state where Alltel took over AT&T customers.

generally you just tell them you want to cancel service.. they cancel it and you don't get hit with the ETF. I wonder how long they'll give you to do it, though... because you may very well want to wait until their upgrades are done before you go switching. Alltel's coverage and rate plans are usually among the best around.

Andy, surely you know that Alltel has taken over AT&T customers in several states other than Oklahoma.

I am asking if their "get out of jail free" card is good anywhere other than Okahoma, specifically western Kentucky where I live and where Alltel is becoming my carrier of un-choice.

The network she's calling on is AT&T's network right? She's signed up with them not Alltel why is she complaining about Alltel? Or did I read that wrong? When Alltel gets the network upgraded it won't be any worse......it will likely be much better. I think they should give Alltel a chance to get the network up and running till they jump ship.

Yes, I konw. Sorry, I must have been multitasking when I wrote that reply. It looks like this specific artile only talks about Oklahoma for some reason. I'd call them up and ask them if you qualify to opt out as well.

I was at the new ALLTEL store about 2 weeks ago and was asking about reception in my area of Kingfisher Oklahoma. The person seemed to be familiar with the local wireless Pioneer/Enid Cellular and said Alltel's reception would be as good as theirs because they had agreements with Pioneer. Is this so, is there any way to verify this information? If so it would be great.

If anyone knows, I'd sure like to hear back.

By the way the map looked great and the price structure was comparable.
