I think Verizon gobbled up the remaining 917 numbers. I know recent ATTWS customers that have 347 numbers. My brother and i have 646 numbers. Anyway, does it really make a difference?

yea it really does when your dad is a business man... People hate having to dial those 'reject' area codes... so at the end it matters... he ready to kill me lol... hes pretty pissed about having a 516

516 has been a NYC area code for a long while actually.

basically 917 (like the 973 area code in NJ) has been all used up. however people disconnect their service and so these numbers are thrown back into the pool that become available so it is possible to get one of these area codes you just have to call back at the right time.

Hm - November 15th 2002 and they don't have 917 area code available?
    Please tell us something new.
I could not get 917 area code from Voicestream (like Omnipoint, it's an old name of T-Moble) in November 2000 - they alerady ran out of them and gave me 646 instead!

First of all its not bull, its life. you don't always get what you want and its not something to obsess about. Second from your other post i see you go to a school where 150 out of 180 of the kids have cells (high end ones at that), so who exactly would be calling you from a payphone? your parents, who probably also have cells with free ld?

Actually the 516 area code has always been for eastern Long Island in Nassau and Suffolk counties. The 631 area code was added a couple of years ago to accomodate Nassau while 516 was retained in Suffolk.

NYC was always 212 until they made Brooklyn, Queens and The Bronx 718.

The 917 was always used for NYC cell phones but it's no surprise to discover that they've run out of them and will add a new code. Walk down any NYC street and count the number of people talking on cell phones. You'll count dozens inside of 20 blocks!

I think you have it backwards- Nassau County kept 516 and Suffolk got 631

If you really want a 917 number you should try calling T-Mobile in the mornings...like before noon. I just got a cell phone about a week ago and got a 646 number initially. They told me to call back the next morning to try to get a 917, which I did...and I got one. If you really want a local number why not try for a 646 which is just like 212 or 347 which is just like 718.

Honestly 917 isn't that great...cuz you're likely to get a number that was someone elses 90 days ago..so guess what happens...lots of wrong numbers.

    Oh well good luck.

It's a simple fact, the increase in cell phones, faxes, and multi-lined homes has used up the phone numbers in older exchanges. This is only going to continue.

You may not realize this but even people dialing in NYC from corded phones will have to soon start dialing area codes even 212 to 212 numbers.

Availabilty of area codes come and go moment to moment. I have 646. I would have prefered 917... But not enough to worry.

If you really want it call every day. As numbers are turned over they are given out.

Is there a time limit as to as long the wireless compaines have to hold on to a number before they can give it out again?

I know that cingular hold a number for 90 days after it's been canceled, I would imagine that other carriers have a similar policies!
