I imagine this has been asked before, so forgive my lack of being able to find it :O

I'm an existing vzw customer, and just bought a Samsumg a670 off ebay to replace the one I lost. I'm not too keen on paying my local vzw shop $13 to press a few buttons on it to activate, as I have a friend of a friend who works at a Verizon-authorized Radio Shack, who says he can activate the phone for me for free, but it'll be awhile before I can get to him, so I was trying to see how to do so myself.

I heard many people say just use *228, but this resulted in programming unsuccessful. I would think it's more involved than that anyway. Im a total noob at this, but doesn't vzw need to know the ESN first? So is there a way I can pull this off myself, or should I just wait for the guy?

    TIA!

Here is the way I have done it, hope it works for you:

    1. Got to www.verizonwireless.com and log in to your account.

    2. Choose "My Accounts" option on top on the red bar and choose "Activate Phone"

    3. Choose "Existing Equipment " from the next screen and follow the prompts.

Let me know if it works for you.

PS: If you have not created an account you can still do but there are couple of additional screens to go through. Let me know if you want those instructions.

after you do the ESN switch online, you should then be able to dial *228, option 1 and it should program your phone for you. :)

From what I've heard so far it looks like VZW fixed the problem. I haven't tried it myself but would imagine a lot of pi$$ed of customers since they began charging $15.00 for an ESN change.

You are welcome. Glad it worked for you. Have fun with the A670, I have used it and its my all time favorite Verizon phone. I really liked the call clarity and physical characteristic of the A670 amongst other things.

If you do it through "My Account", there are no charges, whether activating or deactivating a phone. You simply follow the steps and that's it. I've done it several times without any problems.

If you do come up with an error of some sort, make a note of it and call CS. In cases like this they will do it for you at no charge (at least they're not supposed to charge you). Sometimes it depends on who you get, but I've never had a problem with CS.

Yes you would have to call CS to do this, when you try thru the web site does it give you a reason you can't do it?

Is it a Verizon branded phone? maybe the phone was lost/stolen if it's branded.
I would suggest calling them to see if they can activate it, and if not they can tell you why.
When you bought it off Ebay was it from a reputable user/company?
