It seems like this should be an easy thing for Verizon to do but I can't find it with Verizon.

Yes, I know that I could sign up for Google Voice but I really don't want to add another layer of complexity.

Why do I want to do this? Two reasons, I'm often places where I cannot have a cell phone and have no access to a phone but I do have internet access. The other is that I would like to be able to archive some messages.

Does anyone know if this is something that Verizon plans to offer in the near future?

    Thanks.

I'm not sure about this, but what about Verizon's Visual Voice Mail service? Would it have a feature like this?

No. Visual VoiceMail has no online component; it is simply a pay-to-use addon for the phone's voicemail system. It is included on the iPhone at no additional cost (at least with AT&T) but not on any other phone I've ever seen with VZW. I don't know if it's included on the VZW version of the iPhone or not.
