Again it all depends on where you live, as mentioned in other posts. You can get a Pre-Paid phone in retail stores as well as the T-Mobile store, I would check out their street level coverage map to see how they are where you live.

They appear to have the better more acurate coverage maps available from all the carriers.

The maps are somewhat conservative. I've traveled in areas that were in grey on the old maps and my T-Mobile phones (all Nokia) had full bars in those same areas.

I remember when I drove to Chicago and the coverage map showed some spottiness along the route. However the entire route I never once dropped a signal, not to mention the coverage map shows my house as 3 bars yet I couldn't get anything less than phone signal if I hid the phone in the basement.

My residence is within line of sight of two T-Mobile cell sites, one is on a tower and the other is on top of an apartment building, there is also a Verizon cell site atop the same apartment building. The furthest of these two locations is one mile away.

In my basement, the T-Mobile phones pick up full bars (four or seven, depending on Nokia phone model). The Verizon phone when in the basement, will pick up between four and seven bars.

So, if there is a little spot of gray it still might work there?
