I'm a new a670 owner who didn't do much homework before buying it. As far as the phone itself goes, and it's built-in features, I couldn't be happier. But I was so looking forward to custom ringtones (I lived with a Nokia 5100 for 2 years prior) and I get this spiffy new phone and there doesn't seem to be any good way to get the tones I want. The phone itself supports it, but it's like the phone is too new or *something*. I went to several ringtone sites, which dont seem to support the phone, and even verizon's getitnow has a very scarce selection for this phone as well. If my research is accurate, there isn't even a data cable out for this thing yet.

My wish/goal is to be able to take a polyphonic midi file (from my PC, web sites, etc) and get it as a ring tone on my phone. Is there any hope, or am I stuck with only the crap that vzw's getitnow is coughing up for the a670?

Well ok, I found one very makeshift method which is pretty sucky, but it semi-works. I'm not taking credit for it as I found it on some other site.

    If anyone cares:
Compose a picture message and opt to add an audio recording, which will record whatever the mic can hear and go to send the message. Immediately cancel and the message will fall into your Outbox. Go View it and you can save it to your Saved Messages. Go there and view it again and now you're able to save the elements of the message seperately. Save the audio and then you'll find it available as a ringer.

here is a VERY detailed answer from Mon.k over at phonescoop (he is using eringers.com with this description

the first half is just for eringers.com but the second half can be used for ANY MIDI file. if you have any problems just let me know, I have done this and it worked flawlessly!

Alright I tried all of the instructions. However, everytime I try sending the midis through that verizon webpage. I get this on my phone:

"You've got a picture or video message! To see it, visit www.vzwpix.com/mlib/getpix/ from any computer and follow the instructions."

The phone doesn't play any of the songs, nor can I find anyway to choose to open the midis or play them. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I too am suffering from lack of ringtones.

you need to call Verizon Wireless and have them activate picture messaging on your account. the reason you get that text message is because verizon doesnt think you are allowed to picture message and therefore its defaulting to do what it does for anyone who cant receive a picture message (telling them to go to a website to view the picture)

I do believe that's accurate. But when you can pack 5-7 ringtones in one message, it's a good bargain IMO.

I think they also have a flat rate pix msg deal, which I forget how much it costs but I think it comes out to you only getting something like 12 free pix msgs per month or something, but dont quote me on that.

We got the 20 pix messaging package for $2.99/mo. So we've been using the heck out of this to add tones and wallpapers. On my last bill, all the transfers werre included on my 20 pix package...no extra charges and phone time (but we usually do this on N/W, so still no charges....when we get tired of doing this, then I'll discontinue the $2.99 packages, but right now, it's saving me money!!

the a670, if I remember correctly, only accept the polyphonic ringtones. If you're referring to the viocetones, I don't believe the a670 will accept them.

So far, the only way I've found to get voice ringtones on the 670 is PMD files with a data cable. You can't send them via pixmsg (or at least I've had no success), but you can put them on with a cable and gagin or qpst.

I've been able to use eringers.com successfully by downloading the ringers to my computer, uploading them to vzwpix.com and then emailing them to my phone and saving it as a ringtone.

I don't use the data cables, so this has been a great means for me!! At least from the Yahoo a670 groups, those who use cables seem to have more problems and have a history of screwing up their phones...the vzwpix.com is foolproof so far....

The VZWpix method sounds like it works, but if I'd like voice tones, does the first method work (saving the voice tone thru the phone's mike)?

I had some trouble getting pmd files through vzwpix. Never tried with other sound formats though I must admit.

As far as the data cable. You have to be careful using the cables, but it's fine as long as you use a little common sense. I picked up a cable, and have been using the qpst software without a hitch. It's nice for wallpapers as you can put images on that don't end up with the inevitable white border that seems to come when they're sent through vzwpix.

You would need to save the ringtone in a MIDI format for this to work. You're right that the pmd format isn't recognized and won't send correctly.

So are you saying you saved a voice ringtone as midi file extension, or you've just been working with midi tones so far?

When I've downloaded tones from eringers.com, I will save them in midi format. Before you click "download" there are a list of formats to choose from. I click the first one, which says "MIDI."

It automatically formats them for me into the appropriate format so vzwpix.com can read them...

Ahh, that explains my confusion. My original post back up there was referring to voice ringtones (actual music or voice rather than midi files) which it seems can't be sent through vzw. There were a few ringers I wanted to make for my wife that couldn't be duplicated with midi tones, so I recorded wavs, converted to pmd, and used the cable to put upload them.

    Excellent method described above...

I can upload PNG graphic files with this method and QCP voice files with this method. The VPix site reports an error when I try to upload a MID file... Any suggestions? Thank you!

Elsewhere on Internet forums there is an indication that VZWPix is now, as of this weekend, blocking uploads of MID (midi) files? Has this been confirmed?

    Thanks!

I haven't heard this...I hope this isn't the case as I use this method for my ringtones...

I did it this past weekend and it worked great! I'll have to try it out this coming weekend and see what happens...
