I've about had it with the a530 and the wave of hysterical fans that seem to be following it around like the Backstreet Boys in 1998. I don't know WHAT in God's name makes this phone so special. And VZW? What a gyp. Yay, Get it now! Now I can download Solitaire for 5 bucks! People must be crazy. I have a Samsung s105 with a $39.99 T-Mobile plan that gives me 600 anytime minutes with free nights and weekends. Couple this with T-zones for all of $3 a month and I have web access (that's right, the WEB. that means no provider monopoly to be a slave to. but what's the fun in that?) and 300 text messages a month. I also have better coverage on a network that's always expanding, rather than one that.... hmm, isn't going anywhere, on this continent at least. But I understand that coverage is a regional issue, so i'll move on. T-Mobile gives me... wait for it... FREEDOM. I don't *have* to go through them to download FREE rings, wallpapers, and MIDlets. I don't even have to subscribe to their T-zones at all to access the web. I can do it totally free. I don't *have* to purchase my phone though them; I can go on amazon.com and pick up my 65,000 color phone for a cool 30 bucks. How much was your a530 again? Yeah, sorry to hear it. How much was your plan? Because, according to verizonwireless.com, a $55 monthly plan will get you 550 minutes. But wait.. i've got 50 more than that at 15 bucks less! That's 600 more minutes that I can use over the course of a year, and I'm actually paying $180 LESS! I for one am glad I shopped around before jumping on the James Earl Jones bandwagon. It sure is nice to say I got my money's worth. I ended up getting a better, cheaper phone with more minutes for less money. Why go any other way?
I'm all with you partner. This phone was the most hyped piece of equipment since...And it's people like....(no need to mention names...) that hyped this thing from the get go. I never understood all the comotion about the phone, for Pete's sake, it's a damn PHONE!! I've been with VZ for some six years, we called it Airtouch back then and I used a "brick" to make calls that were noisy, unreliable, and garbled at best! VZ has become stagnant, the coverage is the best, but the lack of innovation, competitive prices, advanced features has started to make me question my "blind" allegiance to my "beloved" carrier. VZ, stop fighting number portability with your high priced lawyers, and let the people choose! Despite all the technical difficulties, it will be good for consumers. I'm sitting here surfing the net at 14.4 on my 530 and I keep reminding myself that it's just a phone, the most overarrated piece of equipment ever!!
Well a hype is a hype... However, I do love my a530 phone. As for your "free" ringtones, I do get free ringtones also thanx to gagin. same goes to wallpapers. As for your free internet service same here, I can go to the internet also (sacraficing my minutes) without paying any extra service fee. As for the price thing, it is pretty true on the price, but which provider without a doubt unarguablly has the best coverage nationwide? Thats verizon, and when you on the move alot and on the phone alot you cant settles for anything mediocore or less. T-mobile is a great service dont get me wrong, but it isnt the best. The phone I can say was ovverated, too many craziness about it, but soo what? The phone is out now and people are happy, if it bugs you soo much then I think you should leave the forum.
GaloBi- you shouldn't leave the forum, say what you gotta say and feel like saying! Good day (night) everybody!
GaLoBi is entitled to his opinion but if I went with T-mobile in my area of upstate NY, I'd barely have coverage at all. They don't have a footprint here, its barely a toeprint. Sure, maybe I pay a little more but call quality and coverage is worth it. What's the point of paying less when you can't get a call to go through? I agree about the phone, it would be nice to get rings and games for free but since my phone is on vibrate all the time and I only wanted one game on my phone, I can afford to pay for what I need. And my A530 will only cost me $50 thanks to my New Every 2 $100 off and $50 rebate, which is a damn good deal. Freedom of choice folks, that's what makes America great!
if I went with T-mobile in my area of upstate NY, I'd barely have coverage at all. They don't have a footprint here, its barely a toeprint." I agree with this statement, i live in upstate NY as well i had used T mobile before i went to Verizon and the Coverage in NY was the worst! I travel all over NYS and let me tell you my sprint coverage was better then T mobile. I was Standing in downtown Rochester and still didnt have a strong signal. everyone has there own needs and there own oppions. BTW i love my A530 the best phone i have ever owned!
I agree with a few things said by galobi. Yes it was an overrated phone and I was one that waited for some time now for this phone. My LG 4400 allows full screen callerid inside display 120x98 not the small 32x32 outside like the 530. Color coded outside ring display was awesome on the LG i knew rather to answer the phone by the color (blue and it was family, Red=unknown caller, Pink=Females, etc. Plus with a photo inside). The LG has a lot of features comparable to the a530. but i like the fact that you can access your voice recorder and ringer volume from the side buttons without opening your phone on the LG. BUT I CAN LIVE WITH IT. As for now the Samsung a530 and the LG 4400 may be the best phone going for verizon right now (display, features, and virtualy bug free) with more phones to come + PTT. I dont think nothing can take the place of service coverage, and I think that is the one area that should not be sacrifice. I've traveled last summer from NY to Disney land (I-95) and I was covered end to end, as my wife ATT service did not so bad, but my sister with voicestream could barely keep up (always searching, NO SIGNAL). In the mall in north carolina I could not find my sister for a least an hour, everytime i called the party is unavailable, when we meet up come to find out she was the only one with no service. T-Mobile does have some great phones and a lot for your money (free services and minutes) remeber you have to make up for weak coverage someway, but i always remember that t-mobile is Voicestream with a name change, that is still growing. I'm happy that you are satisfied with your choice with tmobile, but there are people like myself who are happy with there phone (a530) and verizon service. GIVE ME COVERAGE ANYDAY OVER A FEW LITTLE EXTRAS.
Just because a few people on these forums chose to hype up the release of the a530 doesn't mean the phone was "overrated." The majority of people, such as myself, AnthroMatt and Kenster among others, just kept news circulating with no real intentions of buying the phone ASAP or thinking it was the greatest piece of equipment on earth. Most people in the country won't even know the phone is out until a530 commercials start floating heavy and they come into their VZW store to see about the phone they saw on TV. Your argument seems to be more on the likes of you being upset with people on this forum saturating the Samsung section with a530 threads. That, I do agree with. I value everyone's opinion. Mine is that of what Vince says. T-Mobile gives you all of these incentives to make up for that lack of service. Verizon is also a business, in fact one of the biggest in this country. For them to not be "going anywhere" would be impossible considering how good they're doing. While T-Mobile expands and improves, Verizon, along with every other company (Sprint, Cingular, AT&T) also improves. Just because the changes may not be cosmetic doesn't mean they don't exist. You don't stay #1 by doing nothing.
Yeah I guess as far as the a530 being overrated is in the eyes of the beholder. And we all know that the delay of the release of the phone coupled with the good reviews from a few people who were able to get their hands on the phone -- so it all led to things being hyped up. A lot of the posts were also due to curiousity about the phone's performance as well as speculations as to why Verizon pulled it at the last minute. Again, Verizon's not on the forefront in bringing out the latest ultra-cool phones and so look what happens when you make a Tiger go hungry for days...it becomes a feeding-frenzy at the sniff of any food. Also, Verizon is spending big bucks on trying to expand/improve coverage -- it's perfectly fine to come to your own conclusion about the fact that T-mobile may have a more competitive pricing package for you, but it was pointless and ill-informed to ramble on to the effect that Verizon is doing nothing about coverage and T-mobile is continuing to expand. VZW has been flexing its muscle -- they finally closed the deal last week, spending $750 million on buying more spectrum/licenses in 50 key markets from Northcoast. They're also taking over a small carrier somewhere in Vermont to further boost it's coverage there. These combination of these 2 latest aquisitions/agreements are not small peanuts by any means. But both carriers are attracting a lot of customers -- T-mobile added 900+K and VZW added 800+K subscribers last quarter...so both are quite "healthy" in that regards.
Yubjun, New Every 2 is a program that Verizon offers, when you sign a 2-year contract, at the end of the 2 years, you instantly get $100 off a new phone over $100 or if its under $100, it's free. For example, the A530 goes for $200, when I bought it, I paid $100 and after I mail in the $50 rebate, it will eventually cost me $50. Hope this helps.
"The phone is out now and people are happy" is a falsehood if I ever heard one. Verizon delayed the launch only days before, keeping millions of paying customers hanging by a thread. To the undoubtedly forthcoming argument "They were delaying to make the phones better," and also to the "people are happy" argument, I invite you to look at the thread subjects on this board. All I see is "Problem with a530" "help with a530!" "i need help!" "what do you mean, the a530 can't do such and such?" "screw the a530!" "a530 gets hot" "a530 ringtones help" etc. etc. etc. After reviewing all this, statements such as "people are happy" make me fall out of my chair laughing. The majority of people aren't happy; they're confused as to why such a hyped piece of equipment is performing at a substandard rate. Surprise!
after getting the LG 4400, i switched to the A530. The A530 is an awesome phone, the best i have had so far,and i have had ALOT of phones,Micro Tac,Micro Tac Elite,Star Tac,720,4400,A530,and other various phones not worth mentioning. I have only had the phone for about a week, but i have had no problems yet. It's a very cool phone, people bug out when they see it =) I have this phone for a year, then i'll move on to the next "latest/greatest" phone. I'm thinking about going PDA/Phone next, maybe the I700,unless Verizon has something better by then. We'll see!! Hammr
The phone is tiny. Get it? It's actually smaller than the v8160. It's the smallest Verizon phone ever. That's what's cool about it. That's why those of us who wanted it, wanted it so badly.
Bleh... I looked at T-mobile. Why would I want a phone that doesn't work at ALL outside their puny network? Heck, If I follow the loop around Cincinnnati I cant even stay connected the whole time... I'm SO happy with my new $149 A530...
Believe me.... having owned the v8160 in the past... I don't think anyone missed a tiny phone, more than me! However, I can't overlook overall functionality, performance, and ease of user interface... for the sake of a tiny phone. I really wanted to like the a530 because of its size, but in the areas above, the VX4400 completely won me over!
I'm guess I am a little confused as to the purposes of your posts. You obviously don't hate Samsung phones like many people do, because you are using one yourself. If you have something against Verizon (seems as though you do judging by your first post) this is not really the place to rant about how much better your T-Mobile service is. Fact of the matter is T-Mobile just won't cut it for many Verizon users. I don't know if I have ever heard a Verizon user say they picked VZW over a competing provider because of their great price plans, features like GIN, and awesome phone selection. Most say they chose Verizon because of its fantastic network and highly-regarded (not by me!) customer service. As for the a530 itself...I don't have the phone so I don't know if it is overrrated. I never saw any rating about the phone before it was released. Certainly it was overhyped, I was getting sick of it myself, but that is to be expected when a phone slated for release around Christmas is not released until May. In fact, I don't think it is available here in Ohio yet unless you order by phone, but that may have changed, I haven't checked in the past week. I do know that for every one person that feels compelled to post about how much they love their a530 (and there are plenty of those posts here too!) you will probably find 10-20 that want to complain. People that have an axe to grind will always be more vocal than those that are satisfied.
The "hype" comes from places like this....Not from Verizon. I haven't seen one commercial advertising or "hyping" the a530. Verizon retailers have never hyped this phone. Considering most retailers aren't even aware a phone exists until it is put in their hands, the "hype" rarely if ever comes from them. The "hyped" piece of equipment is performing fine. I personally have not experienced any of the problems that some have posted about. I'm sure the phone (or some of them) has a couple bugs....All phones do. If you haven't found any with yours, you're just not looking hard enough. Of course all you read about are the negatives of a phone. That's the nature of these boards and the rest of them. Rarely does a completely satisfied customer say to themselves that they need to search out a forum and praise their equipment from shore to shore. So you've read 20, 30 maybe even 50 posts on this board and others (keep in mind that most of the people posting on that "other" board also post here...so it's really the same posts)...Ok..So 50 people out of the thousands that have this phone have a greivance. Let's admit it- we're the picky of the picky though..That's why we're here talking about equipment that normally functions fine...Because we thrill in pointing out and finding the glitches... So you think the phone's overrated...So what? I fail to see the relevance of your post. If you feel like stirring the pot, at least do it with a subject of relevance that you can back up with some facts, and in the correct forum...You're original post is more a "rip" on Verizon than the Samsung a530. EDIT: Didn't mean to shadow AnthroMatt...We posted at the same time it seems, and with about the same view point. AnthroMatt- I did see the phone available at a kiosk in the Tuttle Mall. I haven't been to any VZW stores lately, so I don't know if they are there. I know that kiosk just got there's recently though because the guy was surprised to see that I already had one.
Excellent point. Aside from an ad showing the a530 "flying" into a briefcase along with the RIM Blackberry and the wireless data card, I don't think I have seen the a530 in a single advertisement here in Columbus anyway. Hey, I said that first! But you said it better
Never saw that one. Is it a VZW ad? Poster? The only place I've ever seen the phone is in the new "Can You Hear Me Now?" spot where Mr.VZW is standing on the draw bridge playing a game. He's using the a530. But that's a commercial for Verizon and doesn't even mention the phone. You'd probably only know what it is if you were already familiar with it. Seems we posted at the same time! I actually put an edit on my post so people don't think we're copying each other...
It is a television ad...the three devices "fly" into an open briefcase right at the end of the commercial touting Verizon as the solution for all your mobile data and voice needs. I have no idea what goes on in the rest of the ad, but you are right, they never mention the a530 by name like they did in their ads for the VX4400 or the T720. Don't you hate when you post basically the same thing at the same time as someone else? I have actually been surprised how often it happens. Maybe if I had a job and didn't hang out here all day it wouldn't be so common though, lol.
Heh, for what it's worth it's available at the VZW stores down here in cincinnati. We just finished our two year contract and had basically decided to stick with VZW if they could offer us some phones we liked. My wife liked the free Kyocera 2325 and I ended up doing the A530 after the A310 I tried kept insisting on switching to analog in my office. Funny, the A530 seems to have no problem maintaining a good digital signal in here... heh...
Well i think my vzw plan is alot better than any t-mobile plan. 1000 anytime minutes, 4000 night and weekend after 8 (not 9 like most of them unlimited plans) 1000 mobile to mobile, and unlimited text all for just $55. With verizon and all the other companies, i can honestly say you get what you pay for and with vzw you get reliability.
i really hate it when we get into these carrier wars. They will never end and die hard users will figh to the death. each carrier has its pluses and minuses. Tmobile gives you web and more minutes all for cheap however their network is shotty in more areas than not. Verizon gives you alright phones especially with the new vx6000 on its way and a great network on more places than not. And as far as free ringtones, wallpapers, ect.. we get that too so you dont have verizon beat there.
This thread has gone off course...well...Let's be honest- it never really had a course...Not one that belongs in the Samsung forum anyway.
