Is there any way on a 6340i to tell whether your phone is using GSM or TDMA towers?

Yes. But not from the front display.

    1. Select 'Menu'; Select ' Messages'; Scroll up until you see 'Service Command Editor'. If it is in Bold Face font...then you are in GSM; If it is dimmed, gray font...your are in TDMA

    or

    2. During a active call, if you see 'mute' you are in TDMA; if you see 'hold' you are in GSM. These are located in the lower right corner of the display

If you are showing a test mode screen, then move to screen 21-04 of the TDMA group. If you see a system name, like "Cingular" or Cingular Ex", with a SID, you're in TDMA. If you see "XXXXXXXX" for the name, you are in GSM mode.
