CUPERTINO, Calif., June 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Yesterday Apple and its carrier partners took pre-orders for more than 600,000 of Apple's new iPhone 4. It was the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions. Many customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration. We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties, and hope that they will try again or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone 4 is in stock. Actually, it probably took only a few to 6 hours to acheived that - VF Last year it took 3 days to acheive 1 million units of sales with the iPhone 3GS Separately, ATT stated: iPhone 4 pre-order sales yesterday were 10-times higher than the first day of pre-ordering for the iPhone 3G S last year. Consumers are clearly excited about iPhone 4, AT&T's more affordable data plans and our early upgrade pricing. Given this unprecedented demand and our current expectations for our iPhone 4 inventory levels when the device is available June 24, we're suspending pre-ordering today in order to fulfill the orders we've already received. The availability of additional inventory will determine if we can resume taking pre-orders. iPhone pre-order que in Tokyo: _______ I'm guessing if the quarter is taken that includes the iPhone 4 launch, then Apple has overtaken Android in sales for the quarter - whatever or however people want to spin that.
I hope AT&T's network can handle its share of these orders. This is only the beginning for the iPhone 4. Those of us who may get one later will only add to these numbers.
I'm sure they aren't all new subscribers. Probably alot of people ditching their old iPhone for a new one. But yea, I guess AT&T's removal of the unlimited data plan was a preemptive strike against the influx of any new "data hogs"
Re: pre-orders sold out again! Looks like they sold out the second wave too........... Last night, the company sold out of its initial stock for the device's June 24th launch, pushing new pre-orders out to a July 2nd shipping date. The company apparently burned through that second wave of supplies in only about (the following) 16 hours, however, as the online Apple Store is now showing shipping dates of July 14th for new pre-orders of both 16 GB and 32 GB iPhone 4 models. ATT pre-order is still closed! Boy, I'm I glad that I got mine early!!! RR: you may be right...plus a lot of people skipped the 3GS and still have the 3G...probably they moved up to the 4.
From an ATT spokeperson (from NYtimes article today, in Technology Section): "Mr. Siegal (ATT) said more than 13 million people visited AT&T’s Web site on Tuesday to see if they were eligible to upgrade to the new phone, roughly three times higher that the company’s previous record." Can't say if they double count or not, but I guess they counted the same each time...
Wow! this is incredible. I guess many people's contracts with other carriers are expiring or many people that were holding out on improvements and features are now wanting to get an iPhone. I will be with my 3G until all this frenzy is over and until I can save some money for the 4.
I think people knew that the pre-orders would reach them on release day this year after seeing it last year. Too many people were "afraid" to pre-order online last year because they wanted to go to the store and make sure they got one on release day. Add to that, customer confusion over the difference between a 3G and a 3GS, and of course iPhone 4 will have better pre-order numbers.
I guess that you are waiting for Apple to receive delivery of white paint...you would get the white model again? For myself, I need to exercise great restraint. My iPhone 4 will arrive next Friday (got the email from ATT), but it will sit in my house, until mid July when my birthday arrives... So I will have to be happy going to the Apple store and fondling it there... Can you imagine that situation! Considering that pre-orders are not being filled until July 14th now, it was a good decision to order a couple of days ago.
This time I'm going with the black. For some reason I like the black better than the white on this generation. Plus, they'll have time to fix the latest bugs by the time I get it. Anything that ends in x.0 (like 4.0) usually has a bug fix coming soon.
