Anyone know if any of the phone makers will be making quad band gsm phones with tri band 3g? This would be helpful since 3g in the US is 850 and 1900 and it is 2100 in Europe.
U mean UMTS/WCDMA phones which are finally coming our way? LG already has one in the stores, or at least online they do. It sucks, that the USA still continues to bring things up on a totally different network or inthis case, Mhz no wonder things take so long to make it to us.. We just wanna be that much different then the rest of the world..
No, the real problem is the FCC wants to control everything. If they went along with what the rest of the world is doing then they aren't controlling anything. -Jay
The spectrum in Europe is used differently. What might be public in the US may be reserved for safety agencies in Europe. Many places on Earth are completely unlicensed or controlled. Believe it or not, the FCC manages a lot more than just cell phones. You need to set up rules and stick with them. The FCC makes sure you don't die because your call to 911 didn't get through because of the Burger King drive-thru communication system conflicting with your cell phone.
Maybe Europe just wants to be different than us. Seems more plausible these days. The U.S. and Europe have always had different standards, right down to electrical outlets. I don't think anyone is trying to be different, just doing it their own way. Anywho, all of this stuff is easily remedied by Quad-band phones and such.
I'm not sure of the history behind frequency allocation, but the frequencies used for mobile phones in Europe are also used in much of the rest of the world. As for electrical standards, there are differences within Europe itself. Britain uses a different electrical socket to the ones used on the continent.
It looks like the LG CU500 that is rumored to be released by cingular will have quad band GSM and tri band 3g!!
I think both the LG CU500 and the new Samsung will just have 850 and 1900 utms and not 2100. Man I want a phone that has it alll!
@JR1 I don't think we will see a handset with tri-band UMTS support until UMTS coverage in the U.S. has expanded sufficiently to warrant it. Europeans aren't likely to see such handsets until there is enough UMTS coverage in the U.S. to make them worthwhile having. Americans aren't likely to see such handsets until enough enough people are using UMTS to make it worthwhile.
im just curious to know what will happen to the carrier with the 2100 mhz spectrum.....maybe the LG is meant as a percursor to that....
Nope, according to FCC docs (as reported on CNET), it will have tri-band UMTS. http://reviews-zdnet.com.com/4531-10921_16-6508518.html
Does anyone know when Motorola is going to release a 3G model for the US market? The only ones I've seen are European models that don't have 850. -Jay
Ok, I can't wait any longer. I'm thinking of getting a 3G phone now so I can play with it, and when Motorola gets off their butt and brings a 3G phone to the US market I'll ditch it and get the Motorola. Does anyone here have any experience with the LG CU320? http://onlinestorez.cingular.com/ce...NC230056&q_deviceId=cdsku9870121&WT.svl=mod10 I'd rather have a Motorola, but I feel if I jump on the $50 V3 deal I'll be stuck with a really out of date phone in 2 years. -Jay
