Larry, That number is direct from Sprint. As I mentioned, it does not include affiliates, as many are separately traded companies and report their own numbers. Sprint did list their numbers including affiliates - Here's the link it is .pdf format go to page 9 In case you don't have adobe, here's the list (in thousands) Ending customers - June 30, 2002 (Direct) 14,588 (resale) 125 (affilliate) 2,356 (total) 17,069 Total Customers 17.0 million, but those attributable to Sprint PCS the company (tracking stock of Sprint FON) is 14.6 million.
Dan, you are right. VS has done very well the last three quarters. They have added 1.69 million customers, without mergers and without any results from CA or NV included.
Its kinda funny, but the the numbers that Voicestream/T-mobile put up are not that impressive if you really think about it. Let me explain why I say this. Voicestream/T-mobile is sold everywhere, Gas stations, video stores, rental places, company stores, furniture stores, you name it, its sold there. Now I know that Cingular, Nextel, and Sprint are all sold at just about the same amount of places, but its not as bad. Just because a company is only 6th on the list of major carriers it doesnt mean that there is any reason why the shouldnt add just as many customers as another company. Look at Verizon, they sell out of their company owned stores, radio shack, and very few resellers, and At&t isnt too bad either because they seem to have a fewer amount of resellers as others. I am not trying to offend other carriers, just pointing out that size of the company has nothing to do with number of adds they should have.
The size of the company has plenty to do with it (but not size in terms of number of subscibers.) T-Mobile, as of June 30, did not offer service to approximately 45% of the population (that's not their coverage area which would include roaming, but rather areas where they offer their branded service). The other carriers are probably closer to 80% or more. So their numbers are very strong. BTW mighty Verizon added only 186,000 customers in the first quarter. With the addition of CA/NV, the T-Mobile branded coverage area (not including roaming) is now approx. 195 million by my estimates, about 70% of the US. Hopefully their 3rd quarter numbers will top 750K (they will also add another 5 million POPs from other lauches this quarter.)
I know what you mean. Here in California, Cingular GSM seems to be the one that is sold in more places than the others.
Yeah it just depends on the area that you are in when it comes to where service is sold in different places. In my area, Voicestream isn't sold that many places, and I always watch for them too. There is one Voicestream corporate store and about 8 authorized dealers (they sale other provider's service too), and then there's Best Buy and Circuit City. That's it.
SunCom (Triton PCS) posted their second quarter results today and it looks like they did very well this quarter. APRU increased to $58.42, 44,327 new subscribers was added, and churn rate was 2%. Triton PCS Second-Quarter EBITDA Rises Three-Fold to $46 Million; Revenue Increases 36%; Average Revenue per User Remains Strong at $58.42
But isn't their low churn rate to be expected because they usually operate in rural areas with less competition?
