Leaked memo reveals T-Mobile 3G expansion plans in 40+ U.S. cities Leaked memo reveals T-Mobile 3G expansion plans in 40+ U.S. cities Posted by Andrew Nusca @ 3:51 am I don’t like to dabble too much in unconfirmed rumors, but “unofficial” T-Mobile blog TmoNews has what appears to be an internal T-Mobile e-mail outlining 3G expansion plans for the fourth-largest carrier in America in several medium and large U.S. cities in the coming year. The list includes the following: April: Shreveport, La.; Lubbock, Texas; Wichita Falls, Texas. June: Henderson, Nev.; Tucson, Ariz.; Mesa, Ariz.; Scottsdale, Ariz.; Peoria, Ariz.; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Pueblo, Colo.; Daytona Beach, Fla.; Des Moines, Iowa; Eugene, Ore.; Salem, Ore.; Columbus, Ohio; Springfield, Mass.; Manchester, NH; Portland, Maine; Brownsville, Texas; Corpus Christi, Texas; Laredo, Texas; McAllen, Texas. Q3 2009: Little Rock, Ark.; Hartford, Conn.; Wichita, Kansas; Charlotte, NC; Albuquerque, NM; Omaha, Nev.; Rochester, NY; Cleveland, Ohio; Nashville, Tenn.; El Paso, Tex.; Salt Lake City, Utah; Spokane, Wash.; Milwaukee, Minn. and more. Q4 2009: Honolulu, Hawaii; Mobile, Ala.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Lousiville, Ky,; Oklahoma City, Ok.; Pittsburgh, Pa. and more. Shreveport this month to 3G?? Really?? I expected we'd be wayyyy down on that list... especially since we don't even have a T-Mobile store in the city. Maybe its because of our proximity to Dallas? With that, that just leaves Sprint (and MetroPCS, maybe) as the only major carrier without 3G in town. Alltel, VZW, AT&T do, and now T-Mobile will...
I love how Reading is an hour West of Philly and Philly has 3G but we don't have it yet....i just wanna know what's going on
Same boat here in SoCal. A major part of the greater L.A. area is still 3G-less. I was hoping the Inland Empire (San Bernardino/Riverside) would be on the list, but not this year. It's not the end of the world 3G isn't available in that area, but it's a let-down for IE T-Mobile customers.
HowardForums: Your Mobile Phone Community & Resource - View Single Post - the new round of 3G rollout.....it's about time!!! Looks like they're building out at a feverish pace in IE. Those are the words of a t-mo engineer over at HOFO. So, shoot for 4Q at the latest.
Re: Leaked memo reveals T-Mobile 3G expansion plans in 40+ U.S. cities ...and as falls Wichita, so falls Wichita Falls. Just my luck. I probably won't be traveling to Hartford much by then. But I've learned that the G1 is tolerable on EDGE, just not great. SW
Re: Leaked memo reveals T-Mobile 3G expansion plans in 40+ U.S. cities It looks like they're going to have all of New England covered pretty soon. Thats good to hear. Those drives along the MassPike outside of Worcester are pretty painful on GPRS. :browani: Very true...hopefully 3G expansion will make your travels much easier.
Looks like tmobile is really stepping it up quite a bit this year. Good to see! With how the economy is i see more and more people switching to tmobile to cut down cell cost so hopefully tmobile will get better and better.
as we can guess.....when they city they probably actually mean markets........at rates like this....will the 3G upgrades actually improve coverage? or will they only upgrade the current coverage to faster speeds?
Now that we are down to the smaller cities, I think that it really means city. It makes sense to talk about the Boston market or the Philadelphia market because those are population centers that include many large towns/small cities in their surrounding metro areas. But Hartford, CT, Charlotte, NC and Spokane, WA don't have that, nor do most of the other places on this list. The exceptions that I can see are Cleveland, OH and Pittsburgh, PA - really the only 2nd tier cities on this list. The rest are basically 3rd or 4th tier. It's just speculation on my part, but I don't think that they are necessarily extending their coverage - they are trying to get all their current coverage area up to 3G. That's certainly the focus of their marketing and we assume that it's also the focus of their technology spending and engineering effort. Anecdotally, I can report that I was in the Boston suburb of Milton yesterday (roughly 12 miles from downtown Boston), where you would think T-Mobile would have good coverage. Well, they never have, and even with 3G they still don't. Just one observation, but I don't see much evidence of T-Mo's coverage area increasing. SW
damn shame considering that in an overall view of their coverage that's where they lack......value is fantastic....customer service is great........but coverage and network aren't quite up to par with the times
my contract with Sprint comes to an end in November of 2010 but i might be willing to pay the ETF for a little persuasion.....namely 3G and good college value
sorry i just had to post the whole article i'm so excited!!!!!! Q3 Reading, PA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that's a lot of cities!!! this is a really intense rollout!!! how much of the network do you think will be 3G by the end of the year and can the backbone handle all the new traffic?
Reading is Q4, sorry. Lancaster (for me) is Q3. T-Mobile has said their covered POPs for 3G will be over 200 million by the end of the year, I think that will be about 80% of their native network, and AFAIK there haven't been significant problems with the rollout over the last 9 months so there's no reason to expect there to be going forward.
Wow, good to know the major east-end of Greater L.A. (Inland Empire) will be finally be 3G. It's happening quicker than I thought.
