It could be a issue with the network in your area then, otherwise I don't know.
It could be the minute beep function on the phone. It will beep at a set interval, and if you keep track it will tell you how long the call has...
Not real sure about a cantenna (I've never used one) but you could also try getting a wireless repeater for your network, or a wireless bridge....
