On top of power lines, W&OD Trail

Washington & Old Dominion is the name of an old railroad that once used this easement. The tracks have been removed and now it is a bicycle trail that runs from Purcellville to Herndon - Maybe farther. I'm not sure.

I highly suspect this site is off of Rt. 28. If this site is the one I am thinking of it has two carriers, Sprint PCS and VoiceStream (T-Mobile). They are sharing antenna via splitters at the base of the tower. I believe this is an original Sprint Spectrum site. AT&T Wireless (Cingular Blue) is across Rt. 28 on the next power tower over. AT&T fiber optic regenerator should be next to this site.

Nope, this is about 1/2 mile from 28. It is at the intersection of the W&OD trail & Sterling Blvd. This is not where the trail intersects 28 by Carmax.

Yeah. I looked at your directions and the site I was thinking of (39 0 40.2N -77 25 58.8W). They are two different sites. Glad I didn't go mucking about that with the data in that picture. I'll have to check it out. I wonder if that is the microwave donor for my site? If so is probably a VoiceStream site unless it is exSprint Spectrum...

Oh those suburbs go on forever.

This is quite a ways away from Newport News. Do you come up here on business, or did you move and just not update your profile? I know the site you were speaking of is about 1/2 mile away from AOL.

=] Born in Norfolk which is even further away! I come up to the "area" about 4-6 times a year to visit my friend plus a week during Christmas house sitting for friends who head out of state during that time. I have had plenty of time to drive around become familar with the area. I'm still amazed by the VoiceStream build out two years ago along with the improvements made by Nextel in Prince William County. Speaking of AOL, there is a Sprint PCS site ontop of one of the buildings they own but I've never had the patience to deal with traffic on 28 long enough to look for it.

Hoping to move to the area within the next month or so, just in time for prime tower hunting season :)

I was actually scanning AOL's rooftops yesterday as I had pulled over on Waxpool Road for about 20 minutes waiting for my Dad to meet up with me. I didn't see any antennas on top of their buildings. If you're sure there's one there I'll investigate further and try to take a picture.

Not that familar with the AOL campus. Anyway, you were in the area. It is at the least a Sprint PCS site, the coordinates I have for it are: 39 0 13.212N -77 26 58.488W, the street address is only listed as Broderick Road. Good luck!

I don't have a GPS unit. :( I'll give it my best shot though.
    • pbw
Naa, you don't need a GPS unit (althought they are cheap on eBay and very handy). Just plot those coordinates on mapquest, print map and head off. See my website for some cell id guides that may be of assistance. Other wise I'll resolve this issue in the middle of October when I move up there...
