Old American Tower at William Paterson Univ.

This is at the top of the hill on Central Ave. just before it turns into Hamburg Turnpike.

Wow, that's 1 busy tower, does Cingular have 1 close by or is the 1 by the Hess station on Rt 23 close to this site?

Nop...The Hess station tower on Rt 23 is not even active yet! That's a few miles away.

The closest Cingular site is the Wayne Hospital site. About 1/2 mile. This one is right by William Paterson University.

What makes this an "old" tower?`

Because before it was a microwave relay for AT&T Long Lines. The tower is easily 40-50+ years old at this point. I am surprised the horns are still on. American Tower likes to just tear down those distinctive antenna, it seems on a whim.

Those horns are still all over NJ. We have lots of those towers.

I hate those stupid horn things. What exactly were they used for?

Those pre-date fiber optic connections, and were used for long distance calling. Each pair needed line of sight to the next one, and was pretty much the back haul of the US telecom network until fiber.
