New O2 towers, Kirchweg 137, Köln

This is a new T-Mobile GSM setup which went up within the last week. It could also be a UMTS setup but I can't confirm this until the new towers are listed at fst-gsm.de.

I haven't been able to confirm whether this is actually an O2 setup or not. I checked all of the other provider lists for this area and T-Mobile, Vodafone and E-Plus have a large rooftop site 1/4 a mile away at Kirchweg 2. O2 probably added this site to better cover the residential area of Junkersdorf since their closest site is at least 1 mile away.

Here's a closeup of the panel and the coaxial cables leading down along the side of the building into the basement. You can follow the cable duct's path into the basement if you look at the middle bottom portion of the pic posted below:

The BTS cabinets are located in the building's basement. The ground floor houses a pharmacy and the upper floors are regular apartments or a private residence.

Very good - they haven't even finished and you got a picture of it!

Thanks, I only noticed it because I was taking the bus home and noticed the new setup's reflection in a window on the bus :D.

Nice work, Shoresguy. Do you know how good/bad the signal is in the area right now?
    • ShoresGuy
Nope, unfortunately I don't since E-Plus covers my area quite well with at least 2 or 3 towers within a 2 km radius. You may recall that I posted some info about a few hidden antenna panels that are mounted in the stadium lighting masts of the RheinEnergie Stadion. It's located pretty close to where I live and by using CellTracker for my PPC, I've been able to determine that my phones prefer to connect to the towers at the stadium.

I would assume that O2 felt the need to add the tower in that particular area of Junkersdorf since they have the least amount of BTS in Cologne. FST-GSM.de does a great job of listing the number of BTS for each provider:

      http://www.fst-gsm.de/e1-k.html
      http://www.fst-gsm.de/e2-k.html

Vodafone probably also has a very high number of BTS locations in Cologne and they also use the aforementioned stadium setups as well as their own GSM/UMTS setup at the old Kaserne Haelen which was a Belgian base from 1949 until 1996.

It looks like the scaffolding has been erected specifically for the antenna. I've never seen anything like it in the US.

Maybe the safety concern is higher in the EU.
    • ShoresGuy
Yep, it was probably erected as part of the construction process. It has now been removed.

      @ShoresGuy
      I dont think this is a O2-BTS.
The type of the antennas is untypically for O2, because it is a 900 MHz type i think. We must wait until the station is on air.

Thanks for your analysis, then it could be a Vodafone setup since their next setups are in the RheinEnergie Stadion and on the grounds of the former Kwartier/Kaserne Haelen.
