ICE Restaurant Section

Each ICE train has a BordBistro or a Bordrestaurant. Most ICE restaurants were converted into Bistros as a cost-cutting measure. ICEs to Berlin still have restaurants though since the trip lasts over 4 hours from Munich or Cologne.

      I agree with Fire. It is a nice looking set up.

      At least European trains are on time (from what I have heard). My Amtrak trips with my family had the train late by 2-3 hours almost every time.

      ONe major difference between Europe and the U.S. is that Europeans use passenger trains a lot more than americans do. German trains, for example, are mostly punctual, but also very costly. For a lot of people, taking the Deutsche Bahn is still a better alternative than driving though.

      Costly depends on how you define it. Certain ICE routes are cheaper than others and also depending whether you book a few weeks in advance instead of a day before. A lot of Germans use the Bahncard 25 or Bahncard 50 which saves you 25% or 50% off the booking price. Most trains are non-smoking trains (except in the BordBistro or in the BordRestaurant). The stupid thing that the Bahn did was to get rid of the cheap, long-distance IR (InterRegio - Interregional) trains between smaller cities and towns in a bid to get people onto the ICEs. They retained the EC/IC - Eurocity/Intercity trains though.

      I wish I had the option to use more public transit where I live but there is not much of it.

      That is true. DB has gotten cheaper in the years, but they are, IMO, still expensive. A lot of people, like my family, didn't plan trips weeks in advance, it was rather a few days in advance, and by then, DB seemed a rather costly transportation method. My Dad and I used to take the trains a lot to Stuttgart and Munich, then drive cars home.
      German trains are much more comfortable than the trains I've been on in Spain though ;)

      Well, there's UTA bus, lol.
      I use TRAX from time to time when I have to go to work downtown, but other than that and for fun, I just drive. It's faster and much more comfortable. There's also a lot of strange people on TRAX if you know what I mean :)
      They are supposed to be building a commuter rail from Provo to Ogden, and even out to the airport and West Valley by like 2012 or something I thought.

      They're a bit more expensive since they have to compete with the low fare airlines springing up every couple months. Cologne/Bonn has become Germany low fare airline airport. DB had a summer special with one-way rates to select destinations for either 29 or 39 Euros.
