That setup sure reminds me of the ones we have here in Germany and across Europe. You'll find either mast or rooftoop setups. Microcells are also used a lot in shopping centers, stadiums and in airports.

Unfortunately, the architecture is also similar to some of the Koln photos you have posted. I'm assuming they were parts of the town that were bombed out :( .

The surviving old buildings are beautiful - especially in that city - I'd like to visit some day.

Nextel will be going on this rooftop too. I'll post more photos when the installation is complete.

      When was it bombed out?

WWII. The photos from 1944-45 look pretty bad. My wife visited a few years back and said they did a good job refurbishing many of the great old buildings, but some of the sites of old buildings that were beyond repair have been left as open areas in the older parts of town, and many of the newer generic buildings are in the outskirts of town.

You would be much more familiar with the post war re-development though.

Ok you mean Cologne.....:D. That's quite true, many areas were totally destroyed especially the areas right around the Cathedral (90%). Ironically, none of the military bases were destroyed in the bombing campaigns since they all survived to be occupied by the Belgians until they pulled out in the late 90s. They left a couple of the damaged churches standing as a tribute to those who died but those are now being rebuilt.

Many unexploded WWII ordinances are located almost every week whenever construction on the North-South subway continues or when they dig/drill anywhere near the Rhine. Most of the time, they're either American or British bombs.
