Any ideas what the codes refers to?

No, but they are similar to "call signs" from AM radio stations.

When we build a new site, we have to jump through hoops to make sure it doesn't interfere with ancient AM radio stations.

And the odd thing is, the interference is physical, not RF - A new, tall, metal structure can interfere with the AM signal if it is close to an AM transmitter or tower farm.

But my fustration may be misguided in this situation because Ido not know what those codes mean.
