Alltel I-85 Near Exit 80

This Alltel tower is located near the Cowpens-Spartanburg border. It serves I-85 between exits 77 & 83. It uses directional antennas that strictly follow the path of I-85, especially for north of Exit 80. It's located about a mile south of I-85 exit 80 on Gossett Road, and is clearly visible from I-85 exits 77, 78, and 80.

Drove by this tower recently, and the top part of this structure's (pronged omni) antennas were removed.
I guess they were not needed but what were they for & why would Verizon remove them?
Alltel left them there but Verizon took them down. Would they sell the metal for scrap, too? lol. :p

If i had to guess I'd say it was old analog equipment but I thought even that was through sectorized antennas...

Also saw this done on another former Alltel tower in Gastonia, NC, off I-85 exit 17.
