Thumbs up Verizon Wireless Completes Urban Comm-North Carolina Purchase

Well another company the made havoc for auction 35 back in 2001 is all but over in the PCS business. Verizon gets its share of Urban Comm. I am guessing that the rest of Urban Comm that Suncom is getting should be closeing soon as well. Here is the link.

BEDMINSTER, N.J., July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless announced today that it has completed the purchase, initially announced in January, of spectrum licenses in 10 North Carolina markets from Urban Comm-North Carolina for $68.5 million.

"We will put this spectrum to work in our network to benefit our North Carolina customers, by having the capacity in place when they need it to meet their growing demand for voice and data services and by expanding America's best, most reliable network to new areas of the state," said Jerry Fountain, president of Verizon Wireless' Carolinas/Tennessee region.

The purchase includes 10, 20 and 30 MHz licenses, in the 1.9 GHz PCS frequency range, covering a population of 3.9 million people. Three of the licenses will be used to expand Verizon Wireless' network to meet customers' increasing demand for the company's services in areas it currently serves, including Raleigh-Durham, Fayetteville and Burlington.

The remaining licenses will be used to help expand the company's footprint into new markets, including Wilmington, Greenville, Rocky Mount, Roanoke Rapids, Goldsboro, New Bern and Jacksonville.

Following are the markets included in this transaction:

Spectrum licenses for 30 MHz in:
Fayetteville-Lumberton *
Jacksonville
Wilmington

Spectrum licenses for 20 MHz in:
Goldsboro-Kingston
Greenville-Washington
New Bern
Roanoke Rapids
Rocky Mount-Wilson

Spectrum licenses for 10 MHz in:
Burlington*
Raleigh-Durham*

* Areas where Verizon Wireless currently operates its network.

How many regional carriers are left? "Dirt Devilizon" is absorbing all of them.

I don't know if Urban Comm should be called a provider?

I don't if they even got a wireless tower put up. If they did it might be going to Suncom. I think this deal is all airwaves so VZW can build into eastern NC and do EV-DO for western NC. I am sure TNDan or WirelessBeachBum knows more about Urban Comm than I do.
They won a bunch of PCS licenses in NC mainly for the C block went bankrupt. In 2000 the FCC takes away their licenses and are on the table for auction 35 in 2001. Verizon wins most of them and does not get them and they go back to the hands of Urban Comm. A few of their licenses were on the table for auction 58.
