Since the inception of CDMA Roaming Exchange guidelines in November 2004, CDMA-based wireless carriers require a solution known as CRX to enable subscriber roaming on 1xRTTand 1xEV-DO networks. Syniverse Technologies (NYSE:SVR), a leading provider of mission-critical technology services to wireless telecommunications companies worldwide, today announced that it has entered into agreements with 15 CDMA operators worldwide to enable wireless subscribers to access mobile data while roaming. Since the release of CDMA Roaming Exchange (CRX) guidelines by the CDMA Development Group late last year, CDMA-based carriers require a technology solution known as CRX to enable subscriber roaming on 1xRTT and 1xEV-DO networks. Our expertise in mobile data roaming has made us the 'go to' company for CDMA carriers as they launch wireless high speed data services for their customers." Syniverse's CRX solution features the latest IP security methods and network access and transport for multiple traffic types. It is fully integrated with Syniverse's Mobile Data Roaming suite of services that includes authentication, authorization and accounting (AAA) capabilities, rating and reporting, clearing and settlement, and in the near-term, virtual seamless integration with Syniverse's industry leading GSM-based GRX network to enable inter-standard data roaming. Sprint does not even support SMS when off their network (probably a philisophical decision), so their supporting off network data would seem to be stretch for them.

Sprints SMS was originaly web based wasn't it? Any how, this could be really cool. VZW and its roaming partners are suposed to be working on getting sMS/Data roaming up and running sometime in the next year or so as well. |

Actually, Verizon users can send/receive SMS on selected networks already, USCC and Alltel being some of them I believe, as well as MidWest Wireless I think. I'm not sure if it works throughout those carriers networks, but I know some people have sent/received SMS while roaming on these carriers. If I'm not mistaken I though I heard somewhere that Verizon is supposed to start offering Data roaming on carriers like USCC and Alltel late this year or early next year.

According to a friend of mine who works for Sprint they will have CDMA data roaming available in the near future. There has already been an internal release bulletin about it.

If Sprint and Verizon both offer CDMA data roaming, it would make CDMA carriers a much better alternative to GSM Data, which is known to work across networks.

So, do you think they will include off-network SMS without needing to buy a new phone?

If the CDMA carriers can make this happen along with EV-DO (calls being able to come in while on data session) they will give the GSM carriers a real run for their money in the states. I am glad to see this might happen.

Alltel is already allowing data roaming on Verizon. They have a map posted for business users with their 1x data service. Brad |
