CallWave to screen mobile calls, transfer to home Mon Jun 27, 2005 06:11 PM ET NEW YORK, June 27 (Reuters) - CallWave Inc (CALL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) on Monday introduced a mobile phone service that lets customers screen calls and transfer calls to their home phone to save on wireless call charges. CallWave, whose main business is helping dial-up Internet users take phones calls while online, said it is renting minutes from Cingular Wireless, a venture of SBC Communications (SBC.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and BellSouth (BLS.N: Quote, Profile, Research) , for the service. Chief Executive David Hofstatter said expects the service, which he described as the first of its kind, to gain a strong following among cost-conscious consumers who pay for calls in advance rather than via a monthly bill. For a fee of $3.95 a month subscribers can listen to callers while they are leaving a voicemail message. If the subscriber decides to take the call they can interrupt the message, as with answering machines for home phones. The service, which uses the Internet to transfer calls, also gives users the option of saving on wireless charges by transfering the call to their home phone. I don't understand what's Cingular's role in this.

Seems interesting - this is primarily for those who use these services to recieve calls/vm online versus the services that forwards your voicemail to email, correct? I'm doing research on all this as I'm thinking of signing up for the GotVoice one to check my phones while I'm at work. Thx!

I tried their VM on my cellphone and it works pretty good. However, it did not save on my minutes because checking VM uses my minutes instead of M2M (which is to be expected), plus their notification comes through SMS rather than the more usual Message Waiting Indicator.

Cool, thanks for your response. I'm a big montly minute watcher too - that seems to be the selling point for me for the gotvoice thing over the other services, since it send the voicemails to your email as audio files you don't actually have to call your phone and waste those precious, precious minutes. Let me know if you have any other tips or suggestions as I dive into this thing |
