I don't understand this. How can a "Nexus" phone be made by (for example) 5 different companies? Will it be the same exact phone (design, specs, hardware, etc.) just made by different companies? Or will they be 5 completely different phones, just all with the same name?

My guess would be you'll have an HTC Google Nexus, Samsung Goole Nexus, etc. The hardware is likely to be different to some degree, but the software (with the exception of hardware-related differences) will be the same.
