Default Siri says Nokia Lumia 900 is the best SmartPhone ever

Nokia's Lumia 900 is the best smartphone ever, according to Siri.

Apple's Siri virtual personal assistant certainly has said some rather interesting things in the past. But to diss its overlord seems a bit much, don't you think?

When iPhone 4S owners ask Siri which smartphone is the best ever made, the obviously disgruntled virtual personal assistant responds saying it's the Nokia Lumia 900 4G running on AT&Ticon's network. It goes even further, saying that the Cyan-colored Lumia 900 stands above all others.

Although it might look a little odd that Apple's own service would recommend another phone, it actually makes a lot of sense. Siri looked for the answer on Wolfram Alpha, which, if users type in "what's the best smartphone ever?" will point to the Lumia 900. The high rating is delivered base on "customer review average" across the Web.

The Lumia 900 is certainly no slouch. In its review of the device, CNET offered up four stars out of five, calling it "excellent." CNET reviewer Jessica Dolcourt said that the Lumia 900 is her "favorite Windows Phone yet."

Evidently, it might even be Siri's.

Good. It will finally put the nail on the coffins of the 'Walled Garden', closed system, conspiratorial rumblings for all time.

P.S. I just tried it, and yes it (SIRI) comes up with the Nokia 900. It is based on a 5 out 5 star rating, and based on 4 reviews

A little different than stated in the OP of 'The high rating is delivered base on "customer review average" across the Web.' Well I guess that is across the web...but only on 4 reviews.

Let's see, one review from Nokia CEO, one review from MS CEO , one review from ATTicon CEO, and one review from ...Charlyee!!!

    Sorry, LOL, that was easy!

I am waiting for that question to deleted from the Siri data base or replaced with a static answer of iPhone 4s.

Good grief! Is that how Siri works? So when Siri recommends a restaurant, it is based on reviews from the owner, his sibling, his so, and one diner?

LMAO! Charlyee you are toooo much! No, to the above. I believe Siri will give the best recommendation based on the persons location. From the looks of your original post, it looks to me like Siri went to a Web search instead of giving a biased response.

I have had a fun time with most of my iPhone toting co-workers actually taking an interest in my Lumia. These are the same once who didn't know what ICS was or the difference between WM and WP.

Maybe I will ask them to check with Siri

Yes, Siri changed the answer a minute after my first inquire. I get answer such as:

    'you're kidding right?'
    'There is none'
    'In your hands'

anyhow, if you wish to see the original Wolfram Alpha response via Siri, (with the 4 reviews), go here:

    Siri displayed the whole page.

I think people really need to step back and question themselves if they really need to ask a pile of metal and wires what they should eat, buy, wear, if it's raining out, etc. The only "personal assistant" I will ever have is my own brain.

Well the on topic part of the post lost it's meaning as soon as the walls of the garden were fortified by changing the response.

Btw, I always check weather since it's extremely unpredictable around here. It is 81 and sunny today, was 50 and drizzly yesterday.

However, I check the Weather Channel app on my devices or listen to TV.

Since the only thing our forecasts seem to predict with any degree of accuracy is a heat wave checking the weather is an exercise in frustration. "Chance of rain 100%" loosely translates to "you may see some cloudy skies or it may rain cats and dogs -- we have no idea which".

What we do know, is that there will be periods of daylight tomorrow. Followed by scattered darkness.

I can usually find a McDonald's without any problems, and if I need to check the weather I'll look at the rock outside my window

But seriously, what I mean is people don't seem to think enough themselves and rely on others to decide for them. If I need to know the weather, I'll check 3 or 4 different weather sources, to get a rough idea, and then keep in mind they could all be wrong. If I want to buy (for example) a TV, I research a bunch of different makes and models, seeing which has the features I am looking for, what price range they are in, if it's a good brand, etc. I'll aggregate all the info in my head, and make my own decision based on that. Some people don't bother with that and just walk in a store and ask the salesman "What's the best TV you have?" and then buy that. If you ask one person/source, you get one answer. You aren't really making an informed decision. Asking Siri "What's the best phone?" and it telling you "Nokia" is my case in point.

Nice photo. What's the forecast for Tuesday?

Larger question. Why can't we wait until we get to work or home to use the phone? Why is it so important to make a call regardless of where we are?

Convenience. Mobile telephony/internet is a great thing. But I think people need to be careful not to become overly relied on technology that they stop thinking for themselves. People follow their GPS directions verbatim into lakes, trees, etc. ...or even worse, when pilots auto-systems fail, they might not know what to do if they don't have training on how to fly without the use of automated systems:

Pilots’ "automation addiction" has eroded their flying skills to the point that they sometimes don’t know how to recover from stalls and other mid-flight problems, say pilots and safety officials. The weakened skills have contributed to hundreds of deaths in airline crashes in the last five years.

Some 51 "loss of control" accidents occurred in which planes stalled in flight or got into unusual positions from which pilots were unable to recover, making it the most common type of airline accident, according to the International Air Transport Association.

Thanks, nice picture. Let's say I was planning an outdoor event in Bern for Wednesday, let's say a 3pm reception for the newly elected French President, and I needed to know if I should spend $20k on renting awnings, umbrellas and other rain protection or not. Because if the French president is standing in the rain for 2 hours and gets sick, it will be all my fault and I'll lose my job. So I ask my phone "Will it rain on Wednesday?", and I get the picture you posted above. Then I see a sun and I think "Perfect, I don't need to rent these things and can cut $20k off my budget", and I feel good about myself, end of story.

...then I remember that when I asked my phone what the best smartphone is, it told me the Nokia Lumia 900, which is indeed a fine phone, but I don't believe the best, so I begin to doubt my phones predictability and accuracy. So I decide to check another source, and go to the Weather Channel and and see the picture attached below. Whoops. That shows 60% chance of rain on Wednesday. Maybe I should move the event to Thursday, since the Weather Channel says there's only a 10% chance of rain then. Whoops, no, my phone shows a big rain cloud for Thursday. Hmm....maybe I should use my brain, and past experience and admit weather is unpredictable, and if I see 2 conflicting weather reports I should go ahead and order the umbrellas and awnings just in case?

Thanks for illustrating my point further, ask one source, get one answer. Use your brain instead.

BTW, if I ask my weather rock what's the weather for the next 5 days, it won't say anything, which is at least an honest answer and not a misleading one

. I agree with Siri that the Lumia 900 is the best phone. .

Okay then, what do you think is the best Smartphone and the reasons behind it?

You may like the American TV show ' Big Bang Theory'

One understands that forecasts change with each day. So the forecast for weds, changed as of today. Looks the same to me now as yours. my first question was asked a good 12 hours before yours.

The OP was a mockery of Apple and Apple's Siri. Siri responded that the Nokia was the best Smartphone, which is funny, since it didn't give the iPhone as the answer. Of course we know that the Nokia is not the best smartphone, so Siri is incorrect, which further shows the deficiency of Apple's products. What Siri did was use the Wolffram data base, which based on 4 reviews of '5' selected the Nokia for today.

Everyone knows that multiple sources are critical. Which is what makes the Siri response funny. There is not enough time to claim the best smartphone title for the 900.

I think the intent of the OP was understood by most all.

So, just like my weather rock, your phones forecast is only vaid on the current day? What if I needed to order the umbrellas and awnings by close of buisness yesterday?

Indeed understood, which is why I said I don't rely on any "personal assistant". To underscore, in this thread we asked siri about the best smartphone, and the weather in Bern, and it's been wrong on both counts. I guess you need to pitch it a softball if it wants to get something right? I guess the lesson learned is "Don't take siri too siri-ously"?

That's a loaded question, because there is no proper answer, it's subjective. It's like asking "What's the best color?"

@Charlyee: strange, I tried to quote your post, but it was empty Anyway, see my answer is the above, the best smartphone is the one you like the best.

Sorry about that I deleted my post inadertantly while fixing a typo. The original post was meant to be funny but it sure generated some interesting discussion.

Great answer btw for the best Smartphone question.

There's some things, like common sense, that just can't be taught to a pile of metal and wires

I am beginning to wonder if that is true, RR. Humans sometimes have the same problems

You do know that Siri is a AI system that relies on databases throughout the web?

Also, that Siri's database for the weather forecast comes from Yahoo, which uses the Weather Channel, the same forecast Weather Channel webpage used by yourself in your post above?

Siri, and your 'other source' give the same forecast when polled at the same time: The weather Channel. It's that simple, and each is used intelligently by the user.

Indeed, I was thinking the same

Yea, I caught that Yahoo! logo in the corner of your screenshot and was kind of suprised Apple didn't have their own weather forecast source (you know, the sun is always shining everywhere ). I was simply pointing out that weather forecasts can contradict each other, and as you pointed out, the own source can contradict itself within a few hours as the weather changes.

My overall theme here is that it's good to use technology, but don't let it use you. Meaning don't follow it blindly. Some people actually do that and need to be careful of becoming over-reliant on "auto-pilot" systems like siri.

The weather isn't as simple as "The Weather Channel" ...and yea, technology is only as intelligent as the person using it.
