BELLEVUE, Washington (AP) – T-Mobileicon USA Inc. is cutting 1,900 jobs across the U.S. as it consolidates its call centers.

The cellphone service provider — a subsidiary of T-Mobileicon International, which is owned by Deutsche Telekom AG— said Thursday that it is making the moves to cut costs and remain competitive.

T-Mobile will cut the number of call centers from 24 to 17 by the end of June. The job cuts represent about half the number of people employed at the call centers.

The company also said it will restructure other parts of its business during the second quarter. That includes plans it announced previously to modernize its network, add new technology and hire more sales staff.

T-Mobile is based in Bellevue, Washington, and is the smallest of the four nationwide carriers in the United States.

Yup. ATTicon has been cutting jobs, it just doesn't make the news. They manage to be very discreet about it. I & several hundred others lost their IT positions with ATT back in May 2011. I just heard they had another large layoff in January this year.

The way I read these cuts "in order to stay competitive" is as a euphemism for "we are trying to raise capital to buy something." (In their case, maybe spectrum, who knows. Time will tell.)
