Its true, article in today's LA Times, a wireless directory with about 75% of the nations 163 million numbers is about to be published. Fortunately, Verizon is holding out its 36 million subscribers from the directory. Evidently though, most subscriber agreements allow for numbers to be published. So unfair, a cell phone, has been and should be a private number, given to those you really want to hear from. Who, pays the bill, when you get the spam and telemarketers?

I think that this published number idea will backfire. Once a number is published and we begin getting calls asking us if we want to make an invesment in a salt mine, subscribers will begin to demand unlimited incoming calls.

I don't see how they can start it without approval from the Govt. which is still in the works. Also i know AT&T would need to mail an approval/denial letter to each user before they can give out any #'s since in the contract they say they will not give out our # to anyone including a directory. Plus the law going thru congress is going to require the companies get written approval from customers before giving out the #. I don't see this happening this year.

Most wireless contracts have a clause allowing publishing numbers. As far as a law is concerned, it has not happened yet and the Gov't moves slowly.

If the directory does eventually come out, we will give put both of our cell phone numbers in the National Do Not Call list.... I hope it doesn't happen, since every time some wrong number calls our cell phone, we have to use the anytime minutes to check our voicemail if it is before 7 p.m. during the week.

T-Mobile has already said this will be an "opt-in" service for their customers. Quote:

I could care less about telemarketing calls. I almost never answer calls where I can't see the number anyway. I just fear a barrage of SMS spam.
