| T-Mobile USA And HTC Have Sold 1 Million G1 Android Phones Posted by Eric Zeman, Apr 23, 2009 09:58 AM InformationWeek The HTC G1 has passed an important milestone in the U.S. T-Mobile's recently released quarterly report shows that one million of the devices have been sold to customers in the U.S. The G1 remains as the lone Android handset available to consumers in the U.S. and around the world. While some may be eagerly awaiting the arrival of the HTC Magic, one million people have taken to the G1 in the U.S. Shipping one million units is a clear indication that the phone is a success. What's most interesting is that the G1 was one of the first phones to ship with support for T-Mobile USA's 3G network. According to the numbers, it accounts for fully two-thirds of all the 3G handsets sold by T-Mobile. T-Mobile has shipped about 1.5 million 3G-equipped phones in total. To its credit, T-Mobile has expanded its 3G market footprint, though it still has a long way to go to catch up with competitors AT&T (NYSE: T), Sprint (NYSE: S) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ). As exciting as this number is, it pales in comparison to Apple's latest iPhone sales figures. According to AT&T and Apple, 1.6 million iPhones were sold/activated on AT&T's network in the U.S. during the first quarter. Apple sold a total of 3.8 million iPhones around the world during the first quarter alone. The G1 has been on sale since October 2008. HTC has a long way to go to match Apple's numbers, but it still has every right to call the G1 a success. Let's hope the G1's successor is an even bigger hit, because Android needs the boost in visibility. SW

Not bad, I think. Apple, in the US at least, had a very significant pool of potential users in the iPod crowd, as well as (to a lesser extent, I think), Mac users. Goggle/Android didn't have any of that. So they are doing OK.

I will probably get one used to tried out; it will have to be unlocked for me to use it on AT&T Mobility. I have no love of Windows Mobile, running on my HTC 8925 Tilt. I much preferred Palm OS, but I moved to get Wi-Fi. A more generic Android phone, with 3G data on three North American bands, would be a real hit with me, covering 850, 1900, and AWS 1700/2100 MHz. Then I'll be moaning for 700 MHz LTE. COtech

Good for T-Mobile! This is the kind of success they need. If I was still with them, I'd have considered this phone. Along with praised comments from members here, a friend swears by this phone.
