News iPhone Documents to Go - Early May

Just got this email from DataViz - The iPhone will have MS Office soon...

The wait is almost over!

Documents To Go for iPhone coming in early to mid May!

Thanks to all who have been waiting patiently for the arrival of Documents To Go for iPhone. The next time you hear from us, it'll be to tell you that Documents To Go is available for your iPhone and iPod touch in the App Store!

When will that be, you ask? Early to mid May. And trust us, there are some very exciting things about this app that we haven't let out of the bag yet. We hope you'll agree it's worth the wait!

If you haven't seen them, there are some great screenshots for you on our Facebook page (while you're there, become a fan!). And as always, you can stay up to date on our iPhone plans and all the other goings-on at DataViz with our Office Mobility Blog!

Sincerely,
The Documents To Go Development Team

P.S. - Have a friend with an iPhone or iPod Touch? Forward this email to make sure they sign-up to be notified!

DataViz's Documents to Go is providing the software to read/edit MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Pdf files for almost all smartphones - Blackberry, Android, and iPhone.

Were would we be without them?

Are you sure Documents to Go for the iPhone will include PDF? What I saw on their website only listed Word, Excel and Powerpoint. DtG is not the same on all platforms. On the G1, it is currently only Word and Excel. And as far as I know, even where PDF is supported, it is display-only, not editable. Still, an important development.

Yeah, I shouldn't have said PDF, but I also assumed that it would mean read only in any case. Since the native iPhone OS can already read PDF, there is little value in adding that. But DtG must include PDF for some of the other platforms that don't have it native (BB?), since it's listed as such.

Also, they list Word, Excel and PowerPoint, but so far their screen shots show only Word. We'll have to wait and see. Really, Android DtG does not include PowerPoint?

IMO, with the addition of the features of 3.0 and Documents to Go, that should quell any complaints that the iPhone is not a good business smartphone. Including all the applications from the Itunes application store.

So I saw the ad that shows the iPhone sending a document directly to a wifi printer. Trying to get that to work myself.

PDF viewing is definitely available on the Palm, Blackberry and Windows Mobile versions. I did not see any mention of it for the Symbian or Android versions.

That's correct, according to the main Android product page and the feature matrix. It may be significant that the table on the feature matrix page is labeled "Standard Edition", implying that there may be an enhanced edition in the works. I also noticed that the HTML title of this feature matrix page is: "Documents To Go for BlackBerry Smartphones: Standard / Premium Comparison". There is no Standard/Premium comparison on this page, just a list of the standard features. Someone obviously made this page for Android by editing the Blackberry page, but didn't cover their tracks.

I just noticed that Quickoffice, a competitor of Documents to Go, has been announced for the iPhone, so I thought I would post it here. Quickoffice will be available in "April 2009" according to the company website.

There is a video demo of Quickoffice on the iPhone, as part of Phonescoop's CTIA coverage.

Like Documents to Go, Quickoffice has different capabilities on different platforms. The classic Palm OS version is still the most advanced, then S60. Unfortunately for G1 owners, Quickoffice for the G1 is apparently view-only in its first release. Available now.

Yeah, I had QuickOffice for my Palm III. I liked it. If I remember correctly, the Quickbooks (?) Excel iPhone module has been out, but I think the reviews have not been great. Somewhere I posted that already.

But with Docs to Go and QuickOffice, there will be good things coming alone. Thanks for the post.

OK, well, mid-May became mid-June, but who's counting?
