Ruh-roh. AT&T's wireless data service seems to be down in a major way, at least on the eastern half of the country. We're seeing problems with both Edge and 3G from places such as Boston, New York and St. Louis. It's primarily iPhone users pinging us on this, and in AT&T's forums, but we're guessing it's not just limited to them. How is it looking for you? [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Down for everyone or just you? AT&T experiencing a major data outage on the East Coast. - Engadget |

NEW YORK (AP) -- AT&T Inc.'s wireless data network was down Wednesday morning in parts of the eastern U.S., according to user reports and the company. AT&T spokesman Michael Coe said the company was looking into the problem, but could not describe its extent. Users on various online forums reported outages in Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Illinois and Missouri. Voice calls were still possible, but Web surfing and e-mail were not. Most of the outage reports came from iPhone users. AT&T wireless data network goes out in East: Financial News - Yahoo! Finance I guess there is an outage now on the east coast, but it might just be the phones acting weird. Any one having trouble with their data in these states?

I checked with my forumite friends from NJ and IL, and they have not experienced any data outage and I have not in WI either. But then, none of us have the priviledge of owning "The iPhone"

From Fortune When AT&T’s network crashes, it’s iPhone users who complain - Apple 2.0 "According to AT&T, the outage that took down a major data network across much of the northeastern United States overnight Wednesday was brand agnostic — any wireless device using its EDGE network was affected. But by all accounts, it was mostly iPhone users who complained — vociferously — in e-mail messages, in Twitter postings, on Apple and AT&T forums. At DSLReports.com, where many of the early complaints were posted, there were message from the occasional BlackJack II and Nokia N95 user. But headline was “iPhone Users Greeted With Morning Outage,” and that’s who weighed in the loudest. iPhone owners, of course, make more demands on their cellphones than most users." | |

Today I checked my email and had no problems, but then I got "Cannot Connect To Server Error" when I tried to send an email with an attachment 2 minutes later. I just figured it was something to do with the server not liking my attachment. -Jay

My phone wasn't receiving emails at all this morning, but on the other hand all communications were down in north eastern michigan (even 911) because someone cut the main cable. Oops LOL.

I wonder if AT&T customers could run on Dobson and EDGE Wireless WAP even while in Native 410 coverage as a back up. The Dobson and EDGE networks will be up for years while customers are migrated.

I did know it was not an iPhone problem, although one of ther rumors floating around on the AT&T forums was that it was a "negotiation problem between AT&T & Apple", yeah right!!!! I made that comment mainly to see how long it would take for you to respond to it. I had a lot of fun reading the AT&T forums yesterday and yes it seemed to be mostly the iPhone owners complaining, I believe in some areas like baltimore, data was still down last evening.

There was definitely a data outage but it wasn't total. MediaNet and WAP access was working fine, but J2ME apps like Opera Mini, Gmail and Google Maps were totally dead. So many people probably just opened their WAP browsers and when they saw it was working fine they didn't realize the problem.

I didn't test MMS that day but besides MediaNet I remember checking the mobile weather.com site and that also worked fine. But opening Google Maps to check the traffic maps didn't work at all. Tethering was also dead.
