A patent holding company that has won settlements from Apple, AT&T, and others sued Google, Verizon, and a handful of other companies on Tuesday for allegedly infringing on patents related to voice mail, according to a report from Reuters. In addition to Google and Verizon, other defendants in the lawsuit filed by Klausner Technologies are: Cox Communications, LG Electronics, Comverse Technology, Embarq, PhoneFusion, RingCentral, and Grand Central, which was acquired by Google last year. Google, Verizon, others sued over voice mail patent | News - Wireless - CNET News The article is kind of long, but this is just getting stupid. Just because they got AT&T and Apple for it they think they can go and sue everyone else who's using it. Hopefully Klausner doesn't win.

In a capitalist nation, everything becomes a business. There's a lawsuit market out there. So, you can just create a dumb "patent holding" company and don't do anything with the patents. Just keep them around in case someone else comes up with the same idea. Chances are sooner or later it will happen which means you have a new opportunity to sue someone. Or how else do you think these "patent holding" companies make money? NTP is an example. They had the patents to push email and waited until a good number of companies started using push email. Until one day, they decided to sue RIM, and then moved on to others. It's just a game, much like buying assets and keeping them around until you need them.
