Reuters is reporting that earlier today Leap Wireless petitioned the FCC to put a halt to the Verizon-Alltel merger deal. The small CDMA carrier says that were the deal to go forth as planned, it would drastically decrease competition in the industry while making it harder for small carriers like itself to negotiate roaming agreements. Leap currently has roaming agreements with both Verizon and Alltel, but Leap is saying that unless the FCC were to nix the deal or start to regulate roaming agreements, its customers could end up with no service in certain areas of the country. Leap is pushing for regulated roaming agreements that would force carriers to provide access to both voice and data service. Last week Verizon wireless stated that it would honor any roaming agreements that Alltel currently has with other carriers. Leap Wireless markets its services through two of its subsidiaries, Cricket Communications and Jump Mobile Leap Wireless asks FCC to kill Verizon-Alltel deal This is just crazy, it could be good for them if they got a roaming agreement because then they would have even more coverage with the merger. They should just try and get an agreement in with Alltel quick, that way they can roam on their network.

| Haha, yeah, my bad. I guess i read it wrong. Sorry about that, but what do they have to worry about. They'll get more coverage right?

I'm happy to see someone stand up to this. Leap has some legit concerns.

yeah......they'll honor the existing agreements but agreements like that have expiration dates and when the agreement is up you better believe the price will skyrocket

I agree a Leap/Metro PCS deal needs to happen. It will create a more national type of carrier which can better compete against the big players. But once this merger happens I don't want to see Verizon or someone else jump in an acquire them thus eliminating yet another carrier.

Would a Leap/Metro PCS merger be that great of a boost for their long term survival? Even if combined, the company would be half the size Alltel is/was. MetroPCS stating they are using LTE as their 4G Technology is the same as a for sale sign stating "Please Buy me big carrier"! |

Why doesn't Leap take this as an opportunity to pickup spectrum and networks that both Verizon and Altell will undoubtedly have to divest? Chances are they don't want to put up the cash so it is easier to cry to the FCC to get this stopped.

There's a whole bunch of companies that desperately need to start aquiring or start selling. The FCC's made it clear. Two companies is all they want to deal with. If anyone else is going to survive they need to bulk up, quickly.

I hope Cricket (and others) get the FCC to not approve of this merger. Although at the same time I would also like to see some surprises if the merger does happen. I just don't want to lose coverage or have to trash my phone if my market gets divested like to a GSM provider. Nextel and Sprint weren't divested, they just combined, why can't it be this way with VZW / Alltel...after all, I think they'd be better off 2 "separate" networks.

It's going to be interesting to see when vzw divest whether they use their ego or business logic, in some overlapping markets Alltel has the largest customer base, so it is possible that they will roll off the vzw licenses, not the Alltel.... it's going to be interesting.
