Japan's NTT DoCoMo say that it will stop accepting new customers for its 2G mova mobile phone service from the beginning of December. The company also announced that it will waive the normal charge of 2,100 yen (including tax) for any mova user who transfers to a 3G subscription beginning August 8. Given that 2G subscribers have been steadily migrating to DoCoMo's 3G service, FOMA, the company has decided to eventually discontinue its legacy 2G service and concentrate on FOMA. The timing of the 2G service's actual termination will be decided depending on market factors such as how fast 2G users continue to migrate to 3G. Additionally, DoCoMo will stop accepting applications for its car phones by the end of November. Figures from the Mobile World database report that DoCoMo ended the first half of this year with just under 8.5 million 2G subscribers - compared to a 3G subscriber base of 45.2 million Japan's DoCoMo to Stop Accepting New 2G Customers Wow, I guess this seems almost like the US turning of analog. To bad the US doesn't have their 3G system like Japan. I understand that the geography is different, but still.

FOMA is the same as our 3G UTMS system used by ATT. But it operates on 2100Mhz. I first roamed on it in 2006 using my Cingular SIM card in a rented DoMoCo phone picked up at the Tokyo airport (arranged by Cingular). That is one of the primary reasons I picked up the iPhone, because it will operate in Japan. DoMoCo operated the first 3G system in the world. DoMoCo 2G MOVA system was not the same as 2G GSM however. vf |

Japans 2G is based on the American TDMA standard but not compliant. FOMA is similiar to UMTS and the CODEC is not exactly the same. From what I have read some of it doesnt work well with European or US based phones. Japan is supposed to be jumping on the world wide UMTS/HSPA standard.

| O2 operated the first 3G network on the Isle of Man I believe. DoCoMo's was the first commercial network I believe.

DoCoMo's always seemed to be a trailblazer with their 3G FOMA network. They have some pretty sweet phones and services, so this doesn't come as a surprise to me

Japan was first out the gate with UMTS I believe before all the standards were ironed out. I heard they were tweaking it to make it compliant with regular UMTS handsets.
