Once upon a time, Sprint EVDO wireless broadband had a distinct competitive advantage over Verizon Wireless. While Verizon caps usage at 5GB per month and features a TOS that prohibits everything but browsing and e-mail, Sprint offered unlimited usage. Back in May, Sprint lost a lot of good will when it was revealed they'd be mirroring Verizon and employing a 5GB monthly cap (300MB if roaming). At the time, Sprint consoled angry customers by insisting that anyone who consumes more than 5GB of data was statistical freak: "The vast majority of our current users (about 99.5%) shouldn't be affected. Whether it's the 300 MB roaming limit or the 5 GB limit on total data usage, that's enough data to meet the regular monthly usage habits of almost all of our customers." While no date was originally given, customers are now being notified via their bills that the caps begin in 30 days: "Effective in 30 days, Sprint reserves the right to limit throughput speeds or amount of data transferred and to deny, terminate, modify, or suspend service if usage exceeds 5 GB/month in total or 300 MB/month while roaming off network." When announced, Sprint stated they would check your EVDO consumption every three months, and only customers who exceed the limit in two out of three consecutive months face account termination. Sprint now offers EVDO customers a usage meter -- allowing you insatiable bandwidth vacuums the ability to track your gluttonous ways without running afoul of the Sprint bandwidth gestapo. Sprint EVDO Monthly Caps Arrive - Customer bills say cap enforcement begins in 30 days - dslreports.com But this is only for their air cards and not for tethering or phone use right? I bet this will cause a lot of confusion just like AT&T's cap how they say its just a number, but it really applies to air cards.
