Default China Telecom Parent to Spend $11.7 Billion on CDMA Network

HONG KONG -(Dow Jones)- China Telecommunications Corp. plans to invest CNY80 billion (US$11.7 billion) over the next three years in the CDMA network it is acquiring from China Unicom's parent, the company's listed unit, China Telecom Corp., said in a statement Monday.

China Telecom Corp. also said it plans to boost its CDMA subscriber base to 100 million by 2010 from about 43.1 million now.

The fixed-line operator is also targeting value-added services to account for 35% of total revenue by 2010.

Last month, it said its parent will acquire the CDMA network of China Unicom's parent for CNY66.2 billion in cash.

The acquisition is part of a government-mandated restructuring of China's telecommunications sector unveiled in May.

Wow, I always hear that China had GSM. Interesting though, would someone here from the states with CDMA be able to roam on that network?

I wonder if their path will be UMB or LTE.

I wouldn't doubt there's some already out. Just now they have a semi-reason to start making more of them.

yea like Korea refers to their network as CDMA, but it is actually W-CDMA (UMTS as we call it).

just a thought...

AFAIK, if you do not have a UMTS (W-CDMA) phone with 2100mhz capabilities (such as the Tilt, Blackjack2, etc) you can "Hang it up" (pun intended )

there are actually a few Korean companies prospecting to come into my area, and interested parties that have to goto Korea to speak with these persons are buying up ATT for this reason im told...

Korea and Japan are both 2100mhz W-CDMA only from my research

EDIT:

Looks like China may use "CDMA" as we know it in the US. But there is also another Chinese Carrier that does GSM/W-CDMA it looks like. Didnt find the name though.

But i believe im 99% right about Japan and Korean being the "W-CDMA" (UMTS) Flavor.

Whele here what it says in the press release (it is a bit confusing):

3.1 MAJOR TERMS OF THE TELECOM CDMA LEASE

Pursuant to the Telecom CDMA Lease, China Telecom Corporation agreed to lease the Capacity under the CDMA Network to the Company and the Company shall have the exclusive right to use and operate the CDMA Network to provide CDMA services in the Listed Service Areas. In addition, in order to ensure the normal and complete operation of the CDMA Network, China Telecom Corporation also agreed under the Telecom CDMA Lease that, subject to the consent of China Telecom Corporation, the Company may allow third parties to use the CDMA Network related assets that are jointly used by the CDMA and the GSM networks and which are owned by China Telecom Corporation and operated by the Company.

DEFINITIONS
In this announcement, unless the context otherwise requires, the following expressions have the following meanings:
“Acquired Business”

Ltd.

“CDMA”
Code Division Multiple Access Technology, which is a digital transmission technology that accommodates higher throughput by using various coding sequences to mix and separate voice and data signals for wireless communication, including all upgrades to such technology from time to time

i can see China going CDMA just to be complicated and not mesh with Japan and Korea who are W-CDMA (UMTS) Only.

If it is the true CDMA, they also own GSM. So I would think that will stay with the GSM part so at least to continue on gaining roaming revenue as they don't want to be left out from the potential income.

Japan had it own standards for years, they it went to a sort of pre-UMTS calls Foma which does not play nice with standard UMTS.

China does some weird stuff. They have GSM 900 and CDMA 800 and some weird home-grown stuff (think iDen) that I thought they were pushing hard to be thier country-wide standard, but then I think it blew up in their face. Don't know why they are investing so much in a 2G technology Guess they plan to put EVDO on top of it. Maybe that's good enough for them ...or maybe they got some CDMA gear cheap in a Verizon or Telstra fire-sale

It is my understanding that China is going to realign their landline/mobile phone networks. Theyt're going to end up with three companies that are roughly the same size. One will do North American style CDMA. The second will do European/Japanese style GSM/UMTS. The third will to TD-CDMA which is a homegrown Chinese standard. The new companies China's creating will also have wireline components of varying sizes. The biggest mobile phone will have the smallest landline. The largest landline gets the smallest mobile network. Supposedly, this is a huge coup for CDMA because it'll means a substantial expansion of the existing CDMA network but more importantly it'll generate a great deal of spending on CDMA infrastructure and CDMA phones.

The CDMA in China is exactly like the CDMA in North America except that it only has the 800 MHz band. Both my Verizon SCH i670 and my SKT SCH M600 roam in China.

Default Re: China Telecom Parent to Spend $11.7 Billion on CDMA Network

The first cell phone networks in East Asia were 800 MHz AMPS, just like the first networks in North America. Many countries (Japan, Hong Kong, S Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and others) added CDMA to these systems. Most of East Asia added 900 MHz GSM networks (and then 1,800 MHz GSM). Japan converted to their own TDMA network. S Korea went 100% CDMA. Japan and S Korea added 2,100 MHz UMTS compatible networks.

China has had both CDMA and GSM networks since they converted from AMPS. China has been planning to to award 3G licenses for years, but the decision was delayed and delayed. They announced their decision this year. With the Olympics China needed more bandwidth to alleviate the impacted GSM networks in their large cities.
