I'm curious if we'll EVER have more on UMTS (WCDMA) than GSM. LTE is such a buzzword right now, that we may see carriers slow down their UMTS rollout in anticipation of LTE. A big factor is VZW announcing their decision to go with LTE. They have the advantage of not having to transition to anything other than Rev A until LTE is out. AT&T and T-Mobile are at various stages of WCDMA rollout, and they probably won't "finish" before LTE hits the market. There aren't any UMTS-only phones (that I know of). Who's to say that we won't end up with GSM/LTE phones replacing GSM/WCDMA phones? Note: This discussion is all the more confusing because LTE is actually a new rev of UMTS using OFDMA instead of WCDMA. |

People can jailbreak there 2.0 firmware, but there are not going to be that many app's to download, which may drive more people back to 1.1.4.

| Hence the reason I'm not budging from 1.1.4 on my phone yet. Getting 2.0 is worthless for me right now.

Images: 18 | Right, LTE uses OFDMA, while UMTS currently uses WCDMA. If all your competitors are going to one-up you going directly to OFDMA in a couple years, why spend money on WCDMA equipment now?

Images: 50 | That's not an option for iPhone 3G buyers. Although I would never say never because the potential in 2.0 is much greater so it is just a matter of time before all those apps you loved on 1.1.4 will either be ported to 2.0 or an alternative will be developed and made available through Cydia (the installer for jailbroken 2.0). Expect the variety of apps for 2.0 to be greater than what it was on previous firmwares. In the meantime 1.1.4 has more variety, but that will change soon.

One of the reasons I didn't run out to get the 3G iPhone is because I don't need 3G service (I'm not paying $30 extra for it), AT&T's stricter control over the phone, or GPS. I'm quite happy with Version 1 of the phone.
