It would be really nice if this is true. The current iPhone battery is marginal as it is, so this would be a great improvement.

Owners of Apple devices such as iPods and iPhones may soon be able to charge them up by leaving them out in the sun.

I thought excessive heat could damage the device. Leaving an expensive gadget like an iPhone under the sun would probably start melting some of its plastic and deform some of its parts, let alone burn you when you touch its metal parts after it's been under the sun for an hour or two.

The batteries installed in phones are a lot better than the old NiCd batteries. The new Lithium Iion batteries do not degrade like the older ones. Even on days where I take my old Motorola V551, I still get the same talk time I did when it was new.

That's my experience with it, YMMV.

Hi Jay: I replaced my batteries on all of my phones some in less than 6 month some 2 years. All are lithium ion. They are better than the ni cads but still its nice to be able to get to them.

Now if someone would just make a car that runs on lith.... oh wait , it coming "the Chevy Volt." in 2010 Better yet solar charge it.

I often wonder why car companies don't make the roof of hybrid cars solar panels - that could extend the amount of time the car can run on battery power and extend mileage.

Mazda did have a sun roof solar panel in the original 929, it ran a fan to cool the car when it was parked on warm days. It would take really expensive panels to yield enough for a real world car. Although, it could be a nice booster.

That's all I was thinking of. I'm not expecting to run the car on solar, but it certainly could reduce the drain on the batteries, and help top off the battery charge when parked.

Exactly what I was thinking. I can just see it now... some person leaves their iPhone on their dashboard to "charge it" while they go shopping in the mall... come back two hours later and a fried iPhone.

I think that depends on the battery. My Nokia 6131 has over 450 hours of talk time in about 1 1/2 years and life per charge is exactly the same as when it was brand new. However, I think it uses a NiMH battery. And I've had other phones whose battery life per charge has decreased. Besides that, my laptop now runs no more than 2.5 hours per charge. However, when it was new 3 years ago it would top 5 hours per charge. However, I don't know what kind of battery the laptop uses.

I'd like to see more solar powered stuff in the way of cellular technology. Not just in the handsets, but the network too. Here's some light reading:
