News World's Largest Mobile Phone

World's Largest Mobile Phone Built in China
A Chinese man is aiming to get into the World Records after he built what he claims is the world's largest working mobile phone. According to the 17tech news agency, the phone is 3 feet high and weighs 48lbs - and is an exact copy of the builder's daily mobile phone.

Mr Tan Posing with his handset - and handset

Mr Tan, of Songyuan city says that the gigantic phone supports all the same functions, including a camera - but does not vibrate when it rings. Presumably the SIM card holder is also conventional sized.

Tan, an electronics enthusiast, says that he came up the idea for the giant phone a year and a half ago and finally started work on it six months ago.

"Many friends worried I couldn't finish it, and only my father encouraged me to continue," he told the City News. "The neighbours were always knocking on my door asking what was going on with all the noise from the apartment, and even my wife was complaining."

If its that big, and they're calling it a mobile phone... I don't think its exactly mobile. I can duct tape my computer, keybaord, a UPS, and an LCD monitor togeather and call it the world's largest mobile computer... I don't think its being taken far though...

You could probably strap the phone to your back.

Yes, and I'm suprised that he's still married. My first impression when I read your post was "This guy must not have a girlfriend." Then I re-read the original post and realized he was married.

Exactly.

My bed can be taken from one place to another, but I don't show off my "mobile bed."

Per Wikipedia:

The mobile phone or mobile, also called a wireless, cellular phone, cell phone, cell speaker box, or hand phone (HP)is a long-range, portable electronic device used for mobile communication that uses a network of specialized base stations known as cell sites.

So per definition, it is a Mobile phone, although it maynot be as portable as a regular cellphone, it is still portable as opposed to something like a landline phone.

Hmmm, I do have the means to make landline phones portable... At some of the flea markets I will have a Western Electric 2500 sitting on the tailgate of my truck, and watch people's shocked faces when it rings and I answer it. I'll ask if they've ever heard of a car phone... I know I have a warped sense of humor.

I don't have pics, but I have a PhoneLabs Dock-N-Talk that will generate a dialtone and ringing voltage for a landline phone plugged into it. The calls are sent over Bluetooth to a BT cell phone. In my truck I have the DNT plugged into a 110v ac inverter. The only thing people see is the 2500 with the cord going into the cab though, everything else is hidden in the cab.

Sweet! I forgot about the DNT. Must be very entertaining to see people's reactions.

I wonder what kinid of battery it will use. Diehard? At that size, it better have a battery life ranging in the days of talktime, rather than hours of talktime.
