Default T-Mobile Germany is offering PTT on GSM

I guess this is the start of more PTT Service's coming out on GSM phones & it won't be long before it comes here.
The line highlighted is a little wierd though.

T-Mobile Aims To Attract Users To Walkie Talkie Service
BONN -(Dow Jones)- Deutsche Telekom AG's (DT) German wireless arm is giving consumers the chance to test its walkie talkie service for free for three months in a bid to generate interest in the new product.

T-Mobile International AG (TMO.YY) said the so-called push-to-talk service will be free until April 30, after which consumers will pay a daily flat rate of EUR1 for the service, up to EUR18 a month for the domestic service. The company is initially offering two Nokia Corp. (NOK) phones - the 6170 and 5140 models.

Push-to-talk technology - a success in the U.S., where it was pioneered by Nextel Communications Inc. (NXTL) - essentially turns a mobile phone into a walkie talkie. By pressing a button, users connect quickly to a person or a group of people and can yell a message down the phone.

The highlighted phrase sounds like a translation issue. Whoever wrote or translated it must have done so in a very direct manner.

More carriers getting the useless PTT, it'd be nicer if they focused on something better than PTT.

We have a German exchange student from Germany (obviously LOL), and me being the big cell geek I am, asked him what carrier he used, and he uses Vodafone because he says it's the best in Germany, and I'm thinking it's funny because T-Mobile is from Germany.

I think PTT is a great feature and Cingular should get it!

My grandma wants it REALLY badly for her buiness. And I wouldn't mind having it either.

Yes, Vodafone is the best in Germany, coverage wise,(I can concur, I lived there for 15 years), even though T-Mobile says they are... Go figure...

That's amazing. What's that's... like $25 bucks a month? For using way less airtime than with circuit-switched voice. What a rip-off. All hail Europe. Anybody knows what the PTT rate plans here will be like?

The answer to your grandmother's question is spelled "N E X T E L." Independent tests showed that it was the best PTT service available when they compared Verizon, Sprint, and Nextel.

Right now, Nextel is the best PTT service since they are the one's that started it, I believe Verizon & Sprint ran into problems with it & that is why they aren't advertising it.
I don't know how well the GSM PTT is going to be vs them, but it seems with the push on it in Europe & I know Cingular is testing it here in the US right now, so who know's how it will work compared to the other's.
Hopefully they won't have the annoying beeps to it.

True Nextel is the best PTT here by far.

As for the beeps, there has to be some sound that denotes the system has activated for your transmission. Think public safety trunked radio systems for this one, they have to have something!

I do agree, it would be hard to know when someone is calling you without some type of notification, just hope it would be something less annoying, I am glad our radio system doesn't use it or I would go nuts (well I already am nut's )

Are you guys on VHF, UHF, or 800 trunked? 800 trunked systems are where you typically see the beeps before a transmission...

We are on an EDAC's System in the 500 UHF bands. That is why I am glad we didn't go with the 800 trunking system.

Depends on who you ask , Vodafone hasn't offered PTT as of yet. I think they're more concerned with preserving their UMTS lead.
