It is pretty obvious that Apple is working on future iPhone models and there has been lots of speculation that a 3G model would be released in Europe this year.

However, as confirmed by the O2 UK iPhone announcement from earlier today the first European model will also be 2.5G (EDGE) just like the U.S. model.

Upon further questioning at the UK announcement, Jobs did confirm that a 3G model will be released before the end of 2008. He also stated that the reason 3G was not included in the first iPhone was the battery drain users would experience with the 3G radio.

Honestly, as much as 3G would be nice on the iPhone I agree with the compromise Apple made for the first edition, especially given the fact that the iPhone battery is non-removable. If they had used a removable battery then they could have included a 3G radio, like Windows Mobile and S60 devices.

Well at least there's SOME word on a 3G iPhone! Even if it is next year...

So what's going to change between now and late 2008? Are batteries going to get a lot better? Doubt it. Are they going to give the iPhone a removable battery so you can have a charged one with you? Also seems doubtful. I'm not being sarcastic, I really want to know.

With the way time's been flying by lately, late 2008 will be here in the next week or so !
