7-11 offering affordable prepaid phone
This doesn't say who the carrier is and it's in a trial in Florida & is 20 cents a minute on network costs.
For budget-conscious consumers who just want a basic cell phone with a low price and no commitment or long- term contract, 7-Eleven, Inc. has a new phone offering. The Nokia 1100 handset is the latest addition to 7-Eleven(R) stores proprietary Speak Out Wireless(SM) program starting this month at approximately 4,840 participating U.S. 7-Eleven(R) stores. The affordable, entry-level cell phone is available for $39.99 (after the $20 rebate).
The company tested this wireless handset in its 540 Florida stores to evaluate the potential for a nationwide rollout. After one month, customer reaction was so positive that it prompted
7-Eleven to roll the product out nationwide.
Kevin Cooper, 7-Eleven, Inc.'s retail services category manager, said, "The Nokia 1100 phone is an ideal 7-Eleven Speak Out Wireless handset for families who wish to provide a wireless phone for their teenagers; for seniors who want a phone that is active right out of the box, for travelers who left their primary wireless phone at home, and for budget-conscious consumers."
"With cash-oriented wireless users, the price of the handset often proved to be a barrier to adoption," said Adam Guy, wireless practice director at Compete, Inc., a market research firm headquartered in Boston. "So offering a prepaid phone for $39.99 that works right out of the box will lower this barrier."
The 7-Eleven Speak Out Wireless service offers a single, low rate of 20 cents a minute — including domestic, long distance and on-network roaming — to make the program easy to understand and for customers who just want a simple prepaid wireless plan. The program also features 365-day airtime balance expiration so customers can use purchased minutes for up to a year after minutes are added to the account. The starter package also includes 50 minutes of free nationwide airtime (a $10 value).
Customer service is provided in Spanish as well as English and includes bi-lingual product information on all collateral materials and in the wireless phone product-information guide, making the 7-Eleven Speak Out program accessible and customer friendly.
Cooper added, "The new Speak Out product might interest consumers who have waited to buy a wireless phone because of price and monthly billing. The handset includes a long-lasting battery, an anti-slip cover, large keypad, built-in flashlight, instant messaging (SMS chat), alarm clock, stopwatch and countdown timer."
Consumers also can purchase other Speak Out Wireless phones that best suit their needs, such as: a Nokia 3595 handset with color screen and voice dialing for $69.99 (after the $30 rebate); the Nokia 3100 handset with high- resolution color screen and integrated speakerphone for $99.99 (after the $25 rebate), or the Nokia 3200 handset with high-resolution color screen and built-in camera for $119.99 (after the $30 rebate).
7-Eleven Speak Out Wireless refill cards are available in various dominations ($25, $50, $75 and $100) and only at participating 7-Eleven stores. When customers add additional minutes within 365 days, unused minutes will carry forward to the new balance.
The Speak Out Wireless service includes all the features that today's wireless consumers have, including call waiting and voice mail.
