Cellphone charges in Tokyo 3rd highest among major world cities

Cellphone call charges average 39.4 yen per minute in Tokyo, the third highest among major world cities, according to a survey released Tuesday by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

London has the highest average call charges, equivalent to 48.2 yen per minute, followed by Paris, where the average is equivalent to 40.9 yen, the ministry said.

The ministry compared the charges set by leading telecommunications service providers in seven major world cities as of the end of March. The other cities included in the comparison were Dusseldorf, New York, Seoul and Stockholm.

The lowest average, equivalent to 11.7 yen, was found in New York, where fixed charges for oral communication are widely adopted.

The average charge was 19.2 yen in Seoul, 26.3 yen in Stockholm and 34.1 yen in Dusseldorf.

Among other findings in the survey, the cost of using Internet access services based on asymmetric digital subscriber line technology was the lowest in Tokyo for the sixth year in a row.

Wireless service prices here in the US might not be to everyone's liking, but if this report is accurate, we certainly have it better than London, Paris, and Tokyo.
