Samsung snares Big Apple WiMAX contract

Sprint Nextel Corp. awarded the build-out contract of its biggest WiMAX market yet to Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.

The carrier confirmed this morning that it has awarded the equipment contract for the New York City metropolitan area to Samsung. The coverage area will include parts of New Jersey as well, according to Sprint Nextel spokesman John Polivka. New York is scheduled to have Sprint Nextel’s Xohm service—the brand for its WiMAX offering—beginning in late 2008.

Sprint Nextel plans to launch Xohm first in Baltimore; Washington, D.C.; and Chicago in early 2008. The carrier is partnering with Clearwire Corp. to speed the deployment of a nationwide WiMAX network.

Samsung has already been awarded build-out contracts for Washington, D.C.; Baltimore; Philadelphia; Boston; and Providence, R.I. Other technology vendors include Nokia Corp. and Motorola Inc.
