Report: Time Warner, Sprint Look at Deal Wed Dec 29, 9:51 AM ET By The Associated Press Time Warner Cable is reportedly working with Sprint Corp. on a deal that would allow the cable provider to offer cellphone service on a trial basis next year. The deal would put the unit of Time Warner Inc. in a class all its own as the only major cable company to offer cellular service, and would give the two companies stakes in television, high-speed Internet access and wired and wireless phone service, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday. Representatives from both companies confirmed that talks are underway but would not say if a deal was imminent, as the newspaper reported. The service would be limited to Kansas City, Mo., in the first quarter of 2005, but could expand. Time Warner is the country's second-largest cable operator with nearly 11 million subscribers. catv's wants to partner w/ sprint/t-mobile catv to partner w/ cell carriers

Do customers think they are signing up with Sprint or do they think they'll be signing up with Time Warner Wireless? My same question applies to all the other MVNO's out there leasing Sprint airwaves. Do their phones say Sprint on them? Do their bills indicate they are using Sprint's network? If I buy a phone from a MVNO, can I take it to a Sprint store for service related issues? Would Sprint be able to access my account if I signed up through a MVNO? Sprint + MVNO's + Nextel + Partners + Merger = A lot of work. Poor employees. I can imagine some confusion starting to happen. Quarter earnings for net adds will continue to be confusing. Some magazines will include totals of all divisions while others will only post figures that Sprint sold on their own. AT&T will be the most confusing MVNO of all if the deal still falls through. Is this move strictly for profit, or is it an attempt to compete directly with the baby bells who can offer high speed internet and wireless locally? Maybe Sprint doesn't want to pay all the overhead associated with hiring their own employees and sees re-selling as a big money maker. Maybe Time Warner should buy everyone out including all partners and MVNO hopefulls. That way there will be one company, one name, one service, one brand. Less confusion.

Qwest is doing the MVNO thing, and for the first bit of it, the phones were branded Sprint. Now they are branded Qwest.

I'm wondering how many more MVNO's Sprint will cram onto its network. This is getting rediculous.

Cable companies are in a bitter fight with traditional phone carriers, such as SBC Communications Inc., BellSouth Corp. and Verizon Communications Inc., as both are trying to offer the full range of television programming, high-speed Internet, standard voice services and wireless. Cable has to sell wireless and they can't resell those they compete with. |

Another reason is that Sprint serves every urban market natively while the other larger carriers are all missing a few.

Wouldn't a company like Time Warner sell service only to markets they operate as a cable provider or do they plan to market themselves as a national wireless carrier/reseller?
