Woman talking on phone killed by train A woman eating from a bowl and talking on a cell phone walked past a railroad crossing gate and into the path of a freight train, police said Monday. She died later died from her injuries. Investigators suspect the death was accident but have subpoenaed the woman's cell phone records to find out who she was talking to. "She wasn't paying attention," Lt. Mark Duke said. A witness saw the Sunday afternoon accident and told police the woman "was eating from a bowl and talking on a cell phone when struck," Duke said. Duke said crossing gates block cars from entering the intersection but that the woman went past them. Police did not release the woman's name, pending notification of relatives. Duke said the woman was 26. Omaha-based Union Pacific was sending someone to Stuttgart to help with the investigation, Duke said. Last October, a woman wearing headphones was struck from behind and killed while walking along Union Pacific tracks in Little Rock. Lataya Jones, 30, of Little Rock apparently never turned around before being hit. Police said Jones was carrying a can of beer at the time of the accident and didn't notice passers-by trying to get her attention. In June 2002, Wanda Tappin, 44, of Little Rock, was killed _ while talking on a cell phone _ when she drove past crossing gates and was hit by an Amtrak train traveling at 75 mph in southwest Little Rock. Idiots. Each one of them. How the hell does someone walk down an active railway and be absolutly unaware of his or her surroundings. She didnt hear the more that probable very loud horn? Or feel the vibrations from a 300 ton locamotive? Whatever....

That is a possibility, guess she wanted to have a full stomach along with giving the person the "bad message".

| From what I understood, she wasn't in a vehicle, she was on foot... So I would say there was no seatbelt involved... ~*Ash*~

here I would say she was a pure stupid act on her part. I don't know in other states, but here in NY at the RR crossing the side walks also have a gate that comes down and many times I have seen people go around them. I wonder if she did the same and if she did well it is not that she was not paying attention it is more that she messed up with her own jusdgment to cross at such time. I feel sorry she was hurt but stories like this get me mad big time.

All I can say is that she asked for it. It doesn't matter if she was eating or talking on her phone. Why would she cross the already closed rail gates in the first place?

It's a shame when people are hurt/killed; unfortunately our society has long passed the point where they ought to simply be held accountable for their own decisions, actions, and stupidity with no further discussion required.

Images: 50 | A good example is the proposal to fine $100 to anyone crossing the street in NY while using a portable electronic device (iPods, cellphones, PDAs, etc.)

Images: 293 | She was walking, and went around the gates that were down. This is the perfect example of people not being able to do 2 things at once, and end up causing the rest of us to suffer from fines or new laws. As was said in the NYC post, no need to fine these people they are getting punished enough & in this case there is no one to give the fine to. |

I think yes, she could do two things at once....like walking and chewing at the same time.

Some people can multitask and some can not. This woman was trying to triple task (eating, talking and walking). Clearly, she could not do this. There are many people driving SUVs in the left lane on 101 at 50 mph while they are talking on cell phone. They are proving that they can not multi-task, but they are not killing themselves. |
