Windows Mobile Turns 6.0

Microsoft will unveil the next generation of its mobile operating system next Monday at 3GSM. Windows Mobile 6 will seeks to bring the separate Smartphone and Pocket PC platforms together, while making both platforms faster and easier to use. To emphasize this, Smartphone will now be called Standard edition while Pocket PC will be known as Professional edition. Both platforms will have a full version of mobile office including Word, Excel and Powerpoint, and each will inherit features from the other, for instance Professional edition will finally get smart dialing from the home screen. Both versions feature a tight integration with Windows Live service, and improvements like support for HTML formatted email, links to recent calls and messages in the contact application and new calendar views. A number of devices running the new OS are expected to be announced next week as well.
