So I read the wireless papers and magazines. I always wondered why Verizon seemed to be in the news so much. There seems to be a story, a headline, most of the time the story is of minimal importance or interest involving VZW. I did a quick comparison and glanced at the press releases issued by the national providers. This week, just this week alone, I would think Sprint and Nextel to have the most, not the case: VZW: 17 Press Releases Sprint: 5 Press Releases Nextel: 5 Press Releases Cingular: 2 Press Releases T-Mobile: 0, last 1 on 12/8 Just wondering if there is a marketing sense in publishing so many. Do we need a Press Release to announce we put up 1 cell site? Does this work and help sales? I was surprised, wondering if anyone can make sense of why it's just VZW tooting their horn so frequently and if helps them shape the opinion/attitude of a wireless customer. There must be something to it, and if so why don't other providers do so? Just curious. BTW, This just in: Quote:

It can help if it generates coverage in the local TV a/o print media. On a national scale it doesn't matter. But if that PR is converted into a short newspaper story, people may make their decisions based on that...

I really doubt it generates any local coverage. Nobody besides us cares...

Unless you are a Verizon Wireless customer, probably not. There are some people who may be interested in them.

Press releases are targeted more towards the investment community than towards the casual end user. It may be Verizon's strategy to try to drown out the chatter about the Sprint-Nextel merger with a bunch of news of their own to kinda stay in the radar of the analysts and investment muckety-mucks.

On my customized Yahoo news page (telecom related companies for the most part), I see more Cingular press releases than any other, however their press releases are usually about the addition of several new cell sites, not just one.
